Lunar Eclipse - 28 Aug 2007

Postby Killakoala on Fri Aug 03, 2007 11:11 pm

For those who like to take photos of the moon.

There will be a lunar eclipse on 28 Aug 2007 and will be visible in it's entirety from all of the east coast of Australia, and NZ.

Unlike a SOLAR ECLIPSE where the moon blocks out the sun when viewed from Earth, during a LUNAR ECLIPSE the Earth blocks out the sun when viewed from the moon. What we see on Earth is the shadow of the Earth cross the moon as it moves in it's orbit. At totality, the moon turns red due to light from the sun refracting through the Earth's atmosphere, the same as the red sky of a sunrise or sunset.

Thanks Steve. I was discussing this with a few mates the other day. Should be an interesting photographic experience.
