Gary Bought a Canon 30D!!

Postby BT*ist on Wed Aug 08, 2007 3:31 pm

He's said he won't start a thread on this but said I could, so I have :D and I think this is AT LEAST as significant as his purchasing a Sigma 10-20 earlier this year, and can be verified by looking at any gstark autosignature.

Anyway, I thought people need to know. Hence, it's in Information rather than, say, General Discussion!

And dare I say it Gary, you should definitely get a Pentax next. (You can buy Sigma 10-20s for Pentax as well!)

Can someone explain why this is thread worthy? People here are buying cameras and other gear all the time...

Or is it just cause he used to be a Nikon person and started the forum as a Nikon-centric forum? :?:

Kris,

I thought seriously about the 5D, but I think it's overpriced for its feature set. The 30D is less than half price, and is very similar.

Kyle, the 85 1.8 is on my list; I think the 1.2 is overly expensive, given that the Nikkor 85 f1/4 is well under PP1200, and I have one of those.

The 24-70 .... maybe ....

I want to have a basic but usable Canon kit, to supplement what I have in Nikon, hence my two initial lenses, the 18-85 and 50 f/1.8.

I will probably get the 10-22 'cos it's only minimal amount more than the Sigma 10-20.

Don't know yet what I'll get at the long end of the range.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear comments on the 10-22 and 85 f/1.8.

And tonight I'll try to give the 30D a run against the D200.at the Stag.

I think the 5D is a bargain, you are paying for a extremely good full frame good sensor that is stellar with the right optics especially in low light! I guess it depends on what you intend it to do!

If think if you can deal with manual focus, you should get a Nikon to Canon mount and try and utilise your 85 F1.4!!! No point buying a 1.8 version if you've got the F1.4 on the Nikon mount. Ebay has plenty of adapters and it may be worth your time to check out manualfocus.org. Some great info there!

Either way, welcome to the DARK SIDE. I'm 100% sure you'll enjoy your stay

I have the 30D for my low light work - I don't need FF for that; I'm hoping to have FF in Nikon .... sometime soon ... or wait till the price for FF becomes more reasonable.

I'm actually thinking along these lines as well. It's an inexpensive option, and one worth consideration.

owned both, wish i still had the 85 it was an AWESOME lens for a non L, fast, awesome dof not to heavy, the 10-22 is/was probably the best fun ever and again for a non L is superb, probably two of canons lenses which could be L series if they had weather sealing

Not to say that they're not both fine lenses - because I know they are - but weather sealing isn't a pre-requisite for L-Series designation. There are still plenty of L lenses without weather sealing.

The 10-22 could never be L-Series because it's an EF-S mount, and they both fall short on the build quality department.

I thought the pre requisite for an L designation was the presence of a fluorite element in the lens' construction. Not because it meets a certain criteria for image quality, build, or pricetag.

I couldn't believe it myself - Gary with a Canon. What next? The SLK traded in for a Toyota Aurion?! :D

Both show up regularly at mini-meets :)

I have the 85/1.8, it's a really nice lens. It works, and it focuses a lot faster than the f/1.2 version which makes it much more usable outside the studio. I actually use it more than the 50/1.4 on my 30D because it's nice to have the extra reach, I find the 50 more of a studio lens.

a striking analogy? maybe. i definitely wouldn't call it a fair analogy!!!

let's see...

the mercedes represents prestige whilst being massively overpriced? and that the toyota orion is great value for money... hey it might not have the badge, but it goes well, stops well, and has a pretty high equiptment level?

(i think i just opened a hugeeee kettle of fish!)

hahaha but i'm jealous gary, i wouldn't mind having a canon for low light work too.

It depends.

If you don't buy new, a Mercedes can represent exceptional value for money.

But if you want to talk overpriced, look at the prices Toyota ask for the <strike>Camry</strike>Lexus.

and has a pretty high equiptment level?

And there's the great myth. People mistake features for quality.

Still not convinced :D

What about ongoing costs - costs of servicing, spare parts, etc that inevitably pop up as cars age (regardless of mfg, of course).

But back to the point, it's an analogy that can possibly offend both the Nikon users and the Canon users! hahah

Look at prices and value. I have a friend with a $16K C Class that she loves. About the same time my sister bought a Tartlet for about the same $$$$. Who got the better deal?

I bought my SLK for around half of its original sticker price, with just 6K on the clock. I chose a half price, almost new SLK over a brand new Pug which would have cost the same. Which would you have chosen?

And yes, I much prefer European engineering, because - and this is expecially true of Mercedes - it is engineering.

What about ongoing costs - costs of servicing, spare parts, etc that inevitably pop up as cars age (regardless of mfg, of course).

Look at the cost of Honda parts.

Ongoing costs can be expensive with any make or model; it's how the manufacturers make their money.

the reason why i said i was not convinced was because of the next line, ongoing costs. i do not debate that the costs of such cars come down drastically in price, given a few years (it is the name of the game with cars in general, really, given they do not have a cult following).

having a mother who absolutely loved volvos, cemented my hesitation to drive european cars. the inital outlay on her cars were reasonable, however servicing costs were appauling. this compared with my fathers indifference towards cars, and the relatively modest servicing costs.

i was discussing in particular mercedes vs toyota. toyota, holden, and ford are particularly cheap to have serviced and get spare parts for.

in the end i guess its about what you want from your car, and what you are potentially prepared to pay in the long run.

after a long stint with v8s & japanese performance cars, i'm quite happy with my v6 economy pack vp commodore on gas (and having the difference in price in my bank account)
