Considering moving to Canon

I' m really weighing up the move to Canon.

I like the Fuji/Nikon bodies, but just hate waiting for nikon to update their pro glass.

Any thoughts from the dslr crew.

Andrew, I understand your frustration, however with the quality images you take on a regular basis why do do you feel it necessary to swap over? What are you desiring currently that you don't have at the moment?

Seriously... I agree with Geoff though - your images are consistently brilliant. IMO the equipment isn't holding you back at all.

I don't think the equiptment that padey needs/wants/desires is really a question of making his images better. It is probably about making his life easier.

It would be easier to process images if both shooters shot with the same equipment.

But more importantly I'd love faster focusing and quieter glass. 28 and 85 mm f1.4 are very slow, Canon 24/25mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.2 are a lot faster.

Plus an extra stop and better high ISO performance is the type of photography that I find myself longing for.

Looking at your glass I'd suggest the sale of your gear would take about 2.5minutes......

Wild stab in the dark: Nikon are unlikely to announce a wholesale update to their pro lenses. Even just announcing 400/2.8VR and 600/4 VR lenses at the same time would be pretty radical, deciding to do a wholesale update would be unheard of - even Canon with their greater budget haven't done that, it's been a new lens or two every year rather than "bam, here's the mk II version of our lens lineup".

Not that Canon actually have replacements for a couple of Padey's lenses at the moment - the 200/1.8 is no longer in production AFAIK, there is no 12-24 only the 10-22 crop lens and the 16-35 full frame, and the 85/1.2 is very slow to focus by Canon standards (I haven't seen the Nikon to compare). Is the Nikon 12-24 full frame? I assumed it was, that's why I was jealous...

Do it - switch - you will love the ability to shoot at high ISO and still have great colours and very low noise.

There are rumours in the pipeline of Nikon's new lens offerings coming up. But why wait til then, hope that it addresses your nedds, and then wait for another 12 mths for it to become available in the retail channels?! As you've already identified your needs, and the competitor is offering you a viable solution - take it! Go for broke... It makes business sense for you and your working partner to be shooting the same brand.

Meanwhile, I await your 'for sale' posts. That's right - the above post was typed with no hidden agenda.

in the end, it doesn't really matter what Nikon offers or for that matter, what Canon has to offer.

You make your living with your gear. Make your decision a business decision. Sure there will be a learning curve for you initially but put a $ figure on that as well.

As others have pointed out, there certainly isn't any problems with your talent, so Nikon or Canon won't really matter from that perspective. Now you just need to decide on the business side, not the art side. BTW, I don't lust any of your Nikon gear so I don't have a "vested interest in you selling the Nikon gear

if your moving to a 5d or 1d then that makes sense. FF and better iso. anything less than that though and the iso performance is hardly distinguishable from my experience with the 30d.

I'm not sure exactly how much faster the 85mm will be, the 85L is quite slow in terms of AF.

I've got drama's with the AF speed on my 85mm but i'm not actually using it for sports shots.

I think as a wedding photographer, the 5D is pretty much a must, hell the only thing the 5D doesn't do well is sports, its a great portrait/studio/landscape camera.

I'd be more then happy to lend you out lenses if i can tag along with some of your shoots and observe as a wannabe wedding photographer

I was playing a switch with Kris' 5D and 82/1.2L on the AW Dinner the other night... we found that the 85/1.4 on the D2H focuses MUCH MUCH faster than the 85/1.2L USM on the canon. It weights as twice much, and also twice more expensive than the Nikkor...

What Yip says is true, but for weddings the slower AF than the 85 Nikon is a non issue.

Makes sense to have the same/similar gear to Gavin if your current gear isn't making life easy for you.

The speed of the nikon 85mm depends on the speed of your screw drive. The D2h is a sports camera and the screw drive was always faster then my other bodies, with acceptation of my D2x.

And i have even had the guys at European Cameras at Rozelle say the same thing, they have lost the plot!!!!!

That's one hell of a wish list, you're missing a fisheye and 24-70 if you want to mimic your current lens line up.

I say by the bodies from australia, and buy your lenses overseas. Photo continental has them for just over 3k i think iirc and that's Australian warranty.

Lenses and accessories won't matter as they all have international warranty.

End of the day, whoever you make your purchase from is going to be very very happy

Yep, absolutely. I just wanted to make sure that you were aware of the swings and roundabouts. (I'm sure you were, but it never hurts to highlight them, does it?)

I get the tools I need to do the jobs I want done. That's why I also now have a 30D.

I do have to comment, however, on (and apologise for) the really bad taste that everyone seems to be displaying in claiming dibs on your Nikon gear, when the patient isn't even dead yet.
