30D to 5DHey folks
I've been thinking of purchasing the 5D mainly cause of the full frame capabilities and low noise. I've taken interest in portraiture and have some projects coming up. Currently using 30d with 70-200 IS. If I upgrade will I see big improvement on Image quality?
Ron,
If you upgrade, will it change your skill levels? There are good technical reasons to consider the 5D, but I think your question is poorly framed. For portraiture work, and as a first step, I'd probably look at using the 85 f/1.2 rather than upgrading the body. g.

Agreed
Other option, buy a canon 24-70 and invest a little cash in a lighting an backdrop kit perhaps?
Ron, 30d + 70-200 is an outstanding combo for portraits, almost as good as it gets in experienced hands, if you want to expand capabilities definitely add another lens before a new body. 85 F1.2 (or even F 1. are fine lens for portraits. Ron,
There isn't a whole heap of difference between the 30D and the 5D. As you already mentioned, it is essentially a different sensor. What are you going to use it for? Portraits under strobes or in a church? The high ISO noise control on the 30D is still quite great. Go for glass over body. If you were looking for the 1d mk III or 1ds Mk II, then it'd be a different story. Hassy, Leica, Nikon, iPhone

Thanks for all the quick reply folks!
After thinking about it based on peoples opinions here and out weighing the pros and cons I might just go ahead and get myself a 1Ds MkII...I mean, I might put a hold on purchasing a 5D and research some more. I have to admit at $3200 it certainly is a tempting purchase
If I can't afford the current 1ds MkII ($10k) what are the chances of affording the newer version Unless I sell all my gear and just have the body to show it off
Yeah, or sell you left arm, leaving your right arm for shutter clicking.
But yes, I have recently seen a photographer with a 10D and still getting great results. Blog: http://grevgrev.blogspot.com

I think it says something when there's not much difference between the price of your desired camera rig and the deposit on a new house http://www.moz.net.nz
have bicycle, will go to Critical Mass
i've heard there is a 6d coming out to replace the 5d as well... would be interesting to see the price they sell it for....
i know when i got my 400d the 350d had got a lot cheaper around that time but the 400d was released at the same price as what the current 350d was. That really helped me to make the decision at the time to get the 400d cause it was pretty much the same price as the 350d. anyway i wonder the same thing going from a 400d to a 5d will this make my shots heaps better?
What do you think? g.

honestly i would assume a 4k camera compared to a 1k camera should be better in a number of areas.
i also totally understand its all about if people smile ,if you catch the right moment, composition and lighting etc... at the very least my 24-105 would be heaps wider
I agree completely. Glass > body. Andrew
Canon make photocopiers and stick lenses on them....
Yes, that's not an unreasonable assumption, but that wasn't the question that you asked, and that I turned back on you. . Again ...

What use is a bloody house though? You can't take photos with it, and the glass selection is just plain gawd-awful! g.
