If we are reading the rumours right Nikon are going to be bringing out a 12-megapixel fullframe camera with a CMOS sensor that is capable of capturing images at 24,000 ISO. This excites me because if it can get an reasonable image at 24,000 (and yes, I expect noise with that) then it must be capable of something much better than we are getting at the moment in the 1,600 and 3,200 ISO range.

It is worth noting that it is the size of the actual photodiode that governs its sensitivity but if you want big photodiodes you are limited in the number of pixels you can have on the overall sensor. This might not actually be a camera for the commercial guys or the sports photographers but the reportage guys.... the photographers who through the 70's, 80's and 90's put Nikon on the map! If Nikon does produce such a beast I for one will be excited... it will be a camera that I have been begging for for ages.... imagine... getting the full benefit of fast wideangles and getting to combine them with true high ISO's (anything over 1000 ISO will do me nicely thank you). I'm like a kid at Christmas at the moment, waiting to see what Santa is going to bring.... (don't disappoint me Santa otherwise next year that beer under the tree might taste a little funny )

No it's the same avatar, the most recently change was the removal of my Santa hat sometime in January. (I've been pestering Geoff for the original shot but he can't find it so I'm stuck being very very small

nah, i can;t forsee the d300 being FF and besides even if it was FF, most dx lens' have been purchased for the lower price bracket DSLR's. when you think about it, what DX lens' are there that are really worth their salt for a pro-sumer level and up ? i may be missing something but the only one i can think of at the top end is the 12-24 wide angle; the rest are pretty much kit lens' or very consumer grade tele's.

Won't that mean the secondhand market will be flooded with (now useless) DX lenses?

Hi Adam..... DX is here to stay.... it is an ideal format for amatuers and entry level photographers, most of whom are content to spend modest money on modest lenses. The one thing to realise is Canon and Nikon are not going to make exotic lenses for the ASP-C format. If you want to benefit from exotic glass you will need to join the serious shooters and buy a full-frame camera. Canon and Nikon have already invested millions of dollars over the past 20 years making and designing a large ensemble or great glass..... why replicate all these lenses for a smaller format that is only being purchased buy people looking for an affordable camera.

i may be missing something but the only one i can think of at the top end is the 12-24 wide angle; the rest are pretty much kit lens' or very consumer grade tele's.

The 17-55 f/2.8 DX is the other one.

If a company decides to use the sensor in their product(s) the price would be substantially lower than the ”sample” price.
