Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DXNewbie question in 2 parts.
Firstly I am considering purchasing this lense for my Canon 400D, I have ready some good comments about it and would like to get the opinions from those wiser than me (Bare in mind I am a hack). Secondly the going price seems to be $600, can anyone suggest somehere in Melbourne that offer competitive prices. Thank You Bruce
Buy it!
I love it! It is probably one of my most used lenses! I ummed and aahed a bit wondering if I would ever actually use the wide end, but once you start, you can't stop! I can't help with availability in Melbourne, but have heard they can be a bit hard to find. BTW - I am using it on a 30D, but previously on my 300D. In summary, you are unlikely to regret the purchase. Tristan Canon User

Buy it!! I also love it! It's probably also one of my most used lenses! I also wasn't too sure, wondering if I would actually use the wide end, but once I started, I couldn't stop!!! I also can't help with availability in Melbourne, but also heard that it could be a bit hard to find. I got mine when I was in HK. I'm using it on a 30D now, but previously on my 300D. It's a nice SOLID lens ---

i would recomend photobuf i've bought heaps of stuff from them before and the best thing is you can pick it up their in endever hills out near dandenong
http://www.photobuff.com.au/ they have tokina 12-24 680$ i think they usually will give you a uv filter for that price. a friend from work got one for his nikon the other day... i'm thinking about getting one too for my 400d.
I actually brought my 400D from the 4 weeks ago. I spoke to them again at the weekend and they will do the Tokina for $590 incl UV filter. Seems a good price. They are also near my home as they are in Endeavour Hills. Cheers Bruce
I got one of these lenes today as well
First impressions = GREAT! Nicely constructed without being overtly heavy or bulky. Both zoom and focus rings have a nice feel. The clutch AF\MF system rocks. I'm trying to get my head around just WTF I do with all this space! Some quickies from the 'burbs:
Tok 12-24Got mine on Saturday (boy it's wide) from Photobuff for $590 incl UV filter.
I am picking up the cheese & kisses from the Airport tomorrow so taking it out to the observation deck (if it still exists) to take some shots. The photos I have taken so far are very sharp. Bruce
When I originally bought my Tokina about a year ago, I did quite a bit of research into the options. If I recall correctly, the 10-22 is slightly optically superior. However, given the quality of the Tokina, I couldn't justify the extra dollars associated with it. The Tokina is a great lens, and it is good value too! Tristan Canon User

I really want to try this lens on my 1.3 crop camera
and since you guys have given it such a good wrap..i just might!
I'd love to see a shootout between the following:
Sigma 10-20 Sigma 12-24 Canon 10-22 Tokina 12-24 I was going the Sigma 10-20 myself after trying Gary's on his D200 @ the portraiture meet. The Canon I'd expect to be fantastic, but I don't think I want to purchase another EF-S lens. I specifically want it or Landscape and Pano work. Cheers, Warwick
