Shouldn't a smaller number of photosites also have a minor but beneficial effect on the vignetting we see on FF sensors?
Replying (typing) out aloud.
I am thinking that if we had, say a 12MP APS-C sensor and then it was enlarged to be a 35mm FF sensor still at 12MP then the photosites would be larger and would have a reduction of the vignetting that the photosites on the FF sensor might otherwise encounter. (Although that would depend on the depth of the photosite.)
If however, the photosites remained the same size, this would allow more photosites to be fitted onto the sensor, then we might get photosite vignetting on the periphery of the sensor. To prevent this individual lenses might need to be placed over the photosite, which will add complexity and cost to production.
Vignetting of lenses on a large photosite FF sensor would be more likely similar to what we get with 35mm Film SLRs. However technological advances will probably compensate for that as it is a known issue and i am sure is being tackled by CCD and CMOS manufacturers.
We will just have to wait and see what Nikon and Canon have in store for the next generation CCDs, CMOSs or JFETS (or whatever new technology they come up with.)
It's confusing..

That's a very interesting point.
Consider that the production of silicon is a largely photographic process. Once they have a working design, it's usually produced at a given size, which, of course, is a part of the design brief.
But what if they left the design as it was, and simply used a different magnification factor to convert an APS sized sensor into a FF one?
Less chips per wafer, of course, but that's a given. Everything else you've stated becomes true, and the underlying design and associated development costs take on a whole new life.

I wonder if it would be easier to produce a larger photosite.
Now then, Nikon manufactures machines that make CCDs and CMOSs. Surely that would be a market advantage for them.
It is certainly interesting from a technical POV to see where the technology is heading.

No need to wait till then, can see the new cam here
I like the inspiration dial (can dial it up if you lack any, and if you have too much inspiration, you can dial a negative value ! - though I don't like the body styling)

Most impressive for me so far: fine-tune adjustment for AF (yay!) and 920,000 pixel LCD.
A lot of the good stuff seems to be in the D300 as well.
I'm switching to Nikon!
Cheers

both are great cameras. but something i cant get out of my mind... is the d3 aimed towards sports shooters as well as other pro's. if it is aimed at sports isnt it a little pointless having FF in a sports camera, even with the crop mode. Or are nikon just trying to cover all bases ATM

I reckon the D3 is a high-speed camera, designed to offer fast shooting, at extremely high ISO.
You'd think they would follow up with a D3X or similar in about 6-12 months time.
Have a look at the D40 -> D40x
With the specs and price, I think it's clear they are targetting the 1d mk III as a competitor, NOT the 1Ds mk III
I want one

The real question is whether Nikon will have any stock on that date.
A couple of other nice features ... networked cameras .... dual CF slots ... live view .... HDMI .....
but no interchangeable screens.
No mention of multi-exposure modes, which, if dropped, would be a step backwards IMHO.

I leave it to you, Craig, to start the D3x rumour mill! Gotta start somewhere, and people seem to get very excited with rumours.

24-70mm f2.8 bugger --> would have been a slightly better option than the 28-70 f2.8 ... I only say this a I just recently bought a 28-70mm. Had this been out a couple of weeks ago, I may have considered waiting...
still extremely happy with the 28-70...
hmmmmm D3... me cant afford yet... would have to scrifice both D200 and then some to even touch that...
anywaysl its about time Mr. Nikon...

The lenses are of more benifit to me than the bodies too
I just sold my 17 - 55 to get a 17 - 35 but I think I will now get a 14 - 24 that will nicely compliment my 28 - 70
one thing I am not too sure about though is the integrated lens hood could make any filter attachments very difficult.

Just looking at the pics of that lens - I reckon it will be IMPOSSIBLE to attach a filter without breaking it or the front element

i agree. cant compete with the 1Ds with only 12mp.
the d300 looks very appealing to me in the long term. live view, 930k LCD, 51AF points. if they can get the iso right then this is a killer slr.

Oh my oh my.... This is sure a battle between the two grounds!!
I now want a D3!!
The 12.1MP is bit on the side against the 22MP 1DsMk3 on the Canon, but can't wait to see its high ISO performance at ISO 25,600!!!

http://press.nikonusa.com/ and http://www.dpreview.com/ have details of the new cameras.
Plus it looks as though they're really taking on Canon in the long lenses - 500 and 600mm f/4 lenses! This is quite exciting for us Canon users, it looks as though Canon will have to lift their game. The new D3 has most of the features of the Canon pro cameras with a couple of areas where it's probably better - high ISO and more pixels on the LCD so live focus will hopefully be more usable. With such big pixels it will hopefully have decent noise performance at any ISO, and even the 256k ISO should be usable.
Now we just have to hope they become available sooner than Nikons usual performance. This year, say.

You can calibrate your AF system to match up to 20 lenses.
That should shut up those who complain of back-focus.

I wonder if any of these address what Andrew (Padey) jumped ship for, if so then it was rather bad timing (but we still have to see real units delievered in a timely fashion) lets hope Nikon have upped there game.

It wouldn't make me a better photographer, but it would make my prints better (just like going from a D70 to a D200 improved the quality of my prints).

I wonder how long until we see some sample images from both the D3 and the D300.
As an aside, why wouldn't they offer ISO 100 on there top of the line camera ?? Just a sensor limitation ? Or perhaps the 24MP FF D3x will have it ?
