The last thing they really need to do is update the primes to AF-S, and re-introduce the 28/1.4 (in AF-S of course ).
So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!

Images taken with the D3 reflect exceptional overall quality, broad tonal range and depth, along with extremely low-noise throughout its normal ISO range of 200 to 6400. By setting the camera to its built-in options of Lo-1 or Hi-2, the ISO range of the camera can be expanded to the equivalent of ISO 100 or ISO 25,600 respectively, offering unmatched versatility in practically any shooting situation.

Oh Gary Gary Gary... Haven't you realised that all the real photographers are out there taking photos and the only people on here right now are all the lost-case gear-whores?

Y'see Craig, I think the missing piece of the puzzle is.. how well does it perform noise-wise at any particular ISO setting?
I RECKON that the ISO settings given are an indication of the SENSITIVITY of the sensor at that setting. So maybe what they have done is gone "well, it performs just as well at ISO200 as it did at ISO100 on the old cameras, and there isn't much performance gain under that, so let's start at ISO200".
Just a thought.

Thanks (I missed that bit!) But Des is right, its more about the noise at all ISO levels then the ISO levels themselves, man I hope they have nailed that.

Having a higher base ISO allows you to go to higher ISOs with less "boost"

i was thinking of selling my d2xs for one of those ff beasts.... but maybe waiting for a d3x (16mp or 22mp or 24mp or so...) is a better idea.

They do. D3 and D300 have "L1" option which is ISO100.

Get ready for cheap second hand 12-24 DX's from those going the 14-24 route.

I was talking to the guys at EC at Drummoyne and they have been playing with prototypes today and they reckon there is NO disconcernable noise up to 1600 ISO and the 6400 you have to zoom into 300% to see grain and its NOT like the old Xmas tree lights but a more film like grain.....he also said that he would go for the D300 over the D3 in terms of price per what you get and the fact that the D300 has a larger sensor....expect November shipments.....and i am going in on Monday to leave my money on the counter..........WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO

The D300 has a DX sensor, which is smaller than the FX sensor in the D3.
Or did he mean, it has more pixels than the D3 in DX mode? It sure does, 12MP vs 5MP.
Cheers

Dan, wasn't it only a couple of weeks ago that you were saying that Nikon had lost the plot? I thought you wanted to go full frame anyway?

Ohh come on that was complete frustration talking, i get ripped from mates all the time about being with NIKON i just wanted Nikon to come to the party and they have, maybe the 'whingers' like me have contributed to them bringing out these awesome bodies.....they do read forums, they would be silly not too
But yer i was jumping the gun a little........anyone say Lazarus? lol
No i have never said (to my knowledge) that i wanted FF.....

Part of the reason I moved was business reasons (both shoot the same equipment), body reasons (high ISO performance) and glass reasons (no updated fast primes from Nikon).
The D3 does read well, but so does my new body; 1D3. It's a shame Nikon did nothing in with the primes segment to leverage off their new bodies. I've always said, glass > bodies, and this still stands. The business reason were always going to be the same.
The D3 does look like a competitor to the 1D3. I look forward to comparisons/field tests in the future.
I'm just glad i sold 90% of my Nikon gear before today!!! The only thing left is a 28mm f1.4, and that will still hold it's price.

my initial thoughts was that you might be potentially kicking yourself migrating across - with the loss of some $$$. After reading this - damn what good timing you have (must have had inside info )... sold them before them prices go down...

That red triangle that stood out on Nikon bodies has now become a skewed Nike tick. Me no likey.
15 cross-sensor AF points on the bodies available in the new semi-pro model (D300) surpasses the 9 on today's top of the range D2Xs. That's a huge step.
Out of camera TIFFs, LOL. I thought there was a reason it went away after the D100, the totally impractical file sizes.

i would suspect that we may see some primes announced with the d3x in another big announcement...well one would hope anyway. at least we know nikon haven;t been sleeping on the job...they seem to have just been working towards a very high end, major overhaul.
@gary RE: 17-55VR. having used the 17-55IS alot, i for one would love this type of lens. it has come in very handy for landscape, sunset, night photography shots where you can shoot at very, very low SS without tripod. if canon can make it at the price they do it for, i see no reason nikon can;t come to the party and do the same for the same sort of price.

Onyx - Tiffs are available on the D2x/s also - hasn't ever gone away, just a useless feature.
It seems that it is noticeably heavier 1390g(D3) vs 1252g(D2x), a little taller and a little bigger in other dimensions. This is the only thing that I am unimpressed by yet though, everything else is excellent.
I wouldn't have thought that Nikon could announce a D3, D300, 14-24? 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and 400 (2. , 500 (4) PLUS 600 (4) in one day. Incredible really.
EDIT - Padey and Rooz - there are three new primes, just no short focal lengths that we are all after

It will be an option to get from the US or Poon. Wonder which will have it sooner...
5,000.00 USD = 6,126.92 AUD
Better than $8k like the D2x upon Aussie release.
EDIT - an interesting decision is whether to get a D3 for USD$5k with no lenses, or the ZD kit for USD$10 with a prime and separate upgradeable components... both shoot at 14 bit, have similar individual pixel size... still like apples and oranges though, worlds apart.

at US1799 you might get some change out of 3000 aud for the d300.
That sounds good to me.
I sold my 17 - 55 on evil bay this morning at 10 am.....
I think in the next short while more of these are going to be up for sale.
I will now await the 14 - 24

Two killer cameras the D3 a repalcement for the D2Hs, and the D300...!
According to many Nikon "insiders", "watchers"..... whatever, expect a D3X announcement in 6 months.

Okay...now I'm really getting an itchy wallet finger. By the time D3 stock is available I may just about have convinced Stephanie that she needs to take up photography and my D70 will be the perfect device to get her started. Either way, I'll be off to the House of Poon....

Quite a bit of change I reckon, it's slightly cheaper than the release RRP of the D200, which was going for $2500 when they first arrived and that was with a worse exchange rate...
Can't wait.

Full frame requires a larger mirror box and a larger finder prism. I reckon that would be the main reason for the stretch...
