mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
by the time these are actually readily availible on the streets, i'll probably get a d3. i'm guessing it will take 6 months at least... mmm, and a 14-24 f2.8 and a 80-200 f2.8 kit will be complete... unless i get word from the mechanic that my car is dead... then all camera plans are being thrown out the window and i'll be purchasing a new car instead. wish a d3 could drive me places, i'd be sold. only bummer about it is that its still 1/250 flash sync... id love 1/500 or an elec shutter option... body: nikon d200, d70s, f4s, f601.

Here, of course! Small world inside big (Nikon) world outside... We share information, dpreview, nikonimaging, dslrusers, nikonclub, etc etc etc Anyway for a D3 are preciouses as gems with gold....

Nope, but as first (great) FF Nikon at the price of D2X....it's not bad at all.
It’s not the size that matters but how you apply what you have. . . Chris
-------------------------------- I started my life with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left
cant say that im overly thrilled about it, but i really need to see samples of what they are capable of before i make any other decision and im sure nikon would have their reason, and is there going to be d3x??? big question but i am excited about the dual card slots in the d3, pity i'll never be able to justify one so i'll settle on the d300 when its avaliable in 12months you get what you get, always learn from the mistakes
And for most applications 12mb is more the plenty, and if you really need more the D3x will undoubted fill the gap, but if you think you really need more then 12, you might want to other formats.
I am viewing this camera as a replacement for the D2H not D2x MP is not so important to sports pros, speed is and this camera sounds like it is built for speed. I expect (I think other have mentioned it) a d2x replacement to come in the next 6 months. But I probably will never get either I am almost definitely going to get the d300 though.
Yep, and it's me (Fab) that quoted it on to Nikon Club Italy Anyway dpreview is a bit "Lost in Translation"..... as myself .... Because i did not say what is written in that post on dpreview.... In NC Italy I said ..... a colleague photographer in Australia (you) has spoken to a seller (ECS) and he's reported ........ (your quote) That's why I did not translated your post but just quoted it....
I can say i've been waiting a while for this announcement, but i am confused. If i buy a d300, and a nice dx lens, is it going to be completely wasted when nikon releases, say the d3x? Or what more DX-sized cameras could we expect from nikon in the future?
Possibly. The camera has been designed for a specific market and purpose, and a high pixel count is not required within that space. This is not designed as a studio camera, although I daresay that it will do wonderfully well in the studio: look at the work Chris turns out with a 4MP D2H. Nikon have gone for large photosites and low noise; I'll be interested to see how well they've achieved those goals. And don't forget, the Kojak FF cameras are just 14MP studio jobbies and we are well able to get exceptional looking A3+ sized prints from a 6MP D70 ... worrying about this being 12MP is like worrying if the sun will come up tomorrow. g.

That's up to you. The D3, as announced, will use your DX glass automatically, and it'll automatically switch into its DX mode. Who knows what a future model will do? But both new cameras can thus use pretty well all Nikon glass .... this is akin to the fact that we can still use some old, classic Nikon glass - say 30 or more years old - on the newest bodies, which has always been one of Nikon's (few remaining) strengths. On paper, these both seem to be exceptionally well specified bodies. I want one in my hands. g.

IMOH Do not "invest" a lot of money in DX lens nether if you got a D40x. I think Nikon will continue to get out and produce DX sensor for a while especially for the "entry level market" but I repeat IMOH the DX lenses are not so good as FF lenses .....no more future.... (Sex Pistols)
not confirmed of course, but...

i'd love to oblige but security must've ben tighter than a cats ass at the launch cos i cant find a single image. i suspect we'll be flooded with images on the weekend when the osaka games commence.

Here's an interesting article http://www.australianit.news.com.au/sto ... 06,00.html
Nikon are building 8,000 D3's and 60,000 D300s a month Peter

Thanks for posting this Peter - who would have thought that Nikon is beating Canon by so much in Japan this year?! There is hope for the rest of the world to stave of a Canon monopoly yet... Competition is the key to keep us gearheads content. HB
Hmmm, i might be buying myself a nice little Christmas present, assuming there are any available on the market then.
Steve.

Who else thinks that the D200 had plenty of life left in it as a current model and that a D200s would've been quite competitive?
I like the D300, it is a terrific piece of kit, but I'll be watching for some near-$1K second-hand D200's early next year, I reckon. I hope all this drags the price of the Fuji S5 down as well...that's the one I really want. --Chuan "When the only tool you have is Thor's hammer, every problem looks like a supervillain." -- Julian Sanchez
Thanks, it's great.
I haven't been following this as closely as some of you guys. So i hoping you can answer my question.
I over heard a sales rep saying the D3 is 11fps in dx mode, which i gather is about 5-6mp and 9fps in CL mode. Is CL mode 12bit RAW file? Andrew
Canon make photocopiers and stick lenses on them....

Gaffa Tape is like the FORCE... it has a Light side, a Dark side and it holds the universe together
I certainly hope there aren't QC/manufacturing issues to taint the retail launch of these new cameras. eg. if can recall the fiasco following D200's launch re: banding/striping; due to calibration issues with the 4 channel sensor data output - which was radically new at the time.
While I applaud Nikon's engineering driven approach in implementing new technologies, there's certainly plenty of newly introduced tech in these 3 series cameras to make me somewhat nervous for the first batch of buyers acting as beta testers. As these light boxes gets more complex, the chain of weakest link gets exponentially longer. I can just imagine the ultrasonic sensor cleaner in a D300 getting short circuited in the 'on' position - all images shots would end up like my current avatar.
I've got the Press Release info from whomever can give me review samples. RRP's have yet to be announced for here and Vanbar have been known to change prices... I think they're just using an expected / hopeful price.

Are you certain about that? HB
I saw this spec quoted for the D300 somewhere, but didn't realise it applied to the D3 as well So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!
The D3 has a 14 bit A/D convertor that has absolutely nothing to do with the speed of the camera shutter. The D3 is 9fps in FX and 11fps in DX - these are maximum, of course.
If Nikon made a camera with 2.5fps in a pro level camera then I’m sure Sony would buy them out Chris

Typical sales rep. Hasn't got a bloody clue. Three formats: FX - Full frame, 12.1 MP DX - 1.5 crop, 5.1 MP 5x4 - ready-to-wear 10x8s , 10 MP In FX mode ... up to 9FPS In DX mode ... up to 11FPS 11FPS without AF tracking ... CL is continuous low, and should have no bearing on your resolution or processing. g.

No, not really. The weakest link remains a constant - the end user who doesn't understand how to use the bloody camera, and that it still has many constraints within which it should be used. That's where the noisiest "complaints" come from. I've been quite amused to see threads on DPR commenting on how the D3/D300 is being discussed in the Canon section. g.

My impression of ”people” is that no matter what xyz manufacturer does in new models there will be an exponential amount of ”whinging”.
The people that complain about the lack of features on a camera are those that should go back to school and start over. A camera is but a tool - in the hands of a fool it’s still a tool - in the hands of a photographer it’s an extension of the soul. Chris

Hmm neither did I Patrick, I got mixed up between cameras! Thanks for pulling me up on it Heath and Patrick! Perhaps I could get a job as a sales rep.
You may Chris
