Australian RRP has always been sky high, not just for camera gear but my guitars are too, like one was RRP for $5000 here and I got it for $2000 in America.

Anyway, have to wait and see the finalisation of the pricings.

Borge's indicated RRP for the D300 at about $2,400 and D3 at about $7,500, if I recall correctly.

$3k for a d300 ? can;t see that happening. anything north of $2.5k is too steep.

Bit hard to put a price on something you can't even buy yet. :) Let's wait until November when they are 'allegedly' available.

Hence half the issue. I know the RRP of the D200 from what was mentioned at the press briefing with the pre-production models and I know what they're hoping the RRP of the D300 and D3 should be... I'm just not sure if I'm allowed to say them.

So, if your are not sure, there are 4 potential outcomes:

1. You assume you are allowed and you say and your assumption is wrong and you get into s#@t by someone.
2. You assume you are allowed and you say and your assumption is correct.
3. You assume you are not allowed and you don't say and your assumption is wrong - no-one suffers (except those who just need to know something which they can't do anything about for at least 2 months anyway).
4. You assume you are not allowed and you don't say and your assumption is correct.

Mate, it's better to err on the side of caution otherwise there may be future repercussions. We'll find out soon enough how much they are. We just need to be patient.

The D300 is $2950 (Au$) and the D3 is $7990 (Au$).

http://www.praimaging.com.au/l13-nikon-digital.html

Im confused, the USA nikon website lists the D3 @ RRP: $4999
which is the same as the Canon 1D mk III

i, personally, would be impressed if nikon closed the gap between overseas pricing and australian pricing. since nikon actually distributes the product here now (as opposed to maxwell, who were out to make a profit thru mark up), it'd be nice...

but i do not see this occuring. i guess nikon will charge what they feel they can, and they feel they can charge substantially more here than what they charge o/s (even factoring in shipping, taxes, etc).

As will I. I have a business trip to the states in Late November. I've already pre-ordered my D300 to be delivered to my parents (did I mention that I'm a recovering American?) Hopefully I'm high enough on the list to get one in November.

Pre-ordering via Ritzcamera.com. http://www.adorama.com is also now taking pre-ordrers for both the
D3 and the D300

may i, perhaps, act as a voice of reason....

judging from the past, it would not be wise to purchase a brand new model straight off the bat... if it has a problem, you may have to send back to where it came from, or you may not be able to get warentee at all...

eg d200 banding issues, Mk III autofocus.

I think you make a valid point..But I don't think there is to much hasel to send back to poon if required.. Would probably be quicker anyway..

I'll be interested to see how scarce these are at the start, and what percentage will be allocated to our region.

Sheez I go away for two months and you guys make 11000 posts and there are 3 major new camera releases + lenses.

D300 and D3 both have most of the features I was wanting in the new line up. That said I've still very happy with my 3 month old D200 - great camera to use.

And as far as I can tell no information what the noise is like at high ISOs, and how accurate the AF is in tracking action shots. Time will tell. :)

I have decided on a D3, from what i have heard there is a BIG difference between the noise control on the two bodies.......enough for me anyhow to warrant an extra 4 g's........

Dan, I have been reading a review of a sports pro who is a Canon shooter who was given a D3 to try at a baasketball game the other night in the USA. He was very pleased with the lack of noise at 2000 and 3200. He also stated that on this camera, the colours were very good, so this is good news for the Nikon users as you now get to experience what Canon have had for ages..

Yes and no. To the best of my understanding the folks that have access to pre-production models have agreed with Nikon not to post images until the production firmware is finalised.

Still I'd like some general comments from those togs who use it as to how well high ISO stands up. I'd like to hear how well the D300 performs as a sports camera since this would be the main reason for upgrade. (D3 out of my price range)

If you don't mind downloading a 10Mb file, you can get a D3 and a MkIII shot, both taken at 2500iso from about the same place.

The D3 photo certainly looks great for 2500 and the noise that is there is actually "pleasing"

sorry, i meant the d300. i'm not in the market for a d3. i think it's pretty much a given that the d3 will perform very well. but there hasn't really been alot of talk about the d300 apart from its features and specs. not alot about IQ.

The D3 certainly sound impressive but I won't be jumping ship back to Nikon anytime soon. I'm happy where I am with the 5D but looking at the 1ds for further down the track...or maybe MF?

Wow, and interestingly, all but one of the images were taken with the new 24-70mm F2.8 lens.

And some D300 samples too, for those of us keen to see them.

http://nikonimaging.com/global/products ... sample.htm

'Tis just a pity they are only JPGs. I'd love to see some NEFs.
Steve.

i'm beginning to suspect that while the d3 is going to live up to expectations, the d300 at hi-iso will not be able to match the 40d.

Wow, I'd been trying to ignore the hype and wait for some real photos, if these are the real photos, I'm suitable impressed. The noise that is there is pretty pleasing, not ugly and cringe worth.

Hi Craig,
I just tried downloading those images but I think half the world's photogrphic population have got the same idea at the moment.
I was in Auckland when the camera was announced.... I went to a local internet cafe and downloaded and printed everything I could find on it. I am definitely interested in the D3... I think it is going to be the first Nikon Pro camera of recent years that is actually going to stand head and shoulderds above its prosumer and amatuer siblings and that is going to be a real pain.... it means that rather than skimping by buying a D200 I am going to have to buy the real deal. This camera is really designed for photojournalists... its fantastic.... if the performance at 3200 ISO is as good as the D2Xs is at 400 ISO then I am selling everything I have to buy one..... just don't tell my other half!
Cheers for now, Ants

ants,

If that 6400 image is anything to go by you may as well start selling.
