Posts per page

Postby pippin88 on Mon Sep 24, 2007 5:13 pm

Is there a way to increase the number of posts per page?

The 15 or so it is now is too little. I read forums on 100 posts per page.

I have some recollection that user changes of this may need to be enabled but I'm not sure.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick,

That's an admin setting - I'm not seeing that there's a way I can make it a user setting, but there may be a mod that permits this.

I'm happy to make it a larger number of that's what others are happy with as well.

25 or 50 seem like good numbers to me; I don't think I'd like 100, and especial;ly that might be problematic for those with slower connections.

What say the masses?

Gary,

I agree 100 is likely too much for slow connections.

Do you have any idea how many people have non-broadband connections?

I found this, don't know whether it will work with the current version of phpbb: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=318417

I'd like 50, but that might be too many for dialup?

Not a clue, but we still need to consider them.

That looks to be the goods. Let me look at that - hopefully over the weekend. If I go with this option, it means that each user can set his own value, which answers your initial suggestion, and makes my questions moot.

Cheers.

For what it is worth, If the above fix does not work, I agree that more posts per page would be good. About 50 would be a good number.

Cheers.

I think 20 is plenty. Not all of us have 24MBPS speeds. Setting our own would be much preferable. Lets hope the mod works Gary.

On a slightly separate but related issue, is there any way to get a preview on the post when the cursor goes over it. I've seen this on a couple of other forums (Candlepower) and its great cos its a quick way of deciding if you want to open the post other than just going by the title. Does this make sense??

I'm still pretty new here and appreciate it as is, and I guess it must be a whole lot of work to maintain- just a thought. Dont want to add any unecessary work.

Interesting suggestion, Robert. I'll see if there's a mod for this as well.

Suggestions are always welcome, and appreciated.

I really, really dislike this "feature". It's just annoying and causes extra download for those with slower connections, and pauses in mouse movement even for people with fast ones.

I'm be happier with more posts per page, I'm with the "all posts on one page" crew. If the page is designed properly it will render from the top down anyway, so it'll just keep downloading as you read. But that's probably not something Gary can fix if it's broken.

Gary, is there any indication of how many members are actually on the slower speeds? I assume you mean dial up.

Judging from this page, and some of the posts are a little old so may have been updated, there seems to be quite a few on dial up.

I'm on broadband at work but dial up at home. takes a while to see things!!

is it possible to have it on a per profile (account) basis? so all the broadband users could set it to 100 if they so desire.

That's the intent of the mod that Nick has linked me to, so yes, that's going to be the goal.

Norbs, NFI, but see Robert's post too. I do know we have a number of members who live in areas that are not metropolitan, and they would certainly be affected.

I'm interested too in the discussion from Moz over Robert's hovering cursor suggestion, and would appreciate more feedback on that point. I see the feature as being useful, but I do take Moz's point as well, so I'd like to see what others think about this.

That said, I've not yet looked to see even if there is a mod for this, so I have no idea if it's doable, but if y'all don't want it, then there's no need for me to look. :)

They have this on the Digital Grin forum (smugmug forums) and I find it VERY annoying... I am with Moz on this one.

It always seems to get in the way of things underneath it and you find yourself just constantly moving the mouse so the popup does not appear.

Just my 2c

Nick,

Not as yet; we're really waiting for Olympus to go GA before I do more to the codebase.
