Lens choice help pleaseHi all in DSLRland:
Heading over to NZ next week for 5 weeks of work (plus a little sightseeing as I go). I need a wide angle lens (I have a Canon 30D) and have narrowed the choice down to either the Canon 10-22mm or the Canon 17-40mm L. Both are approx the same price, the 10-22 is EFS and the 17-40 is EF. Some advice on which would be the better purchase will be much appreciated. With thanks, Ozi. What other glass is traveling with you?
I'd be inclined to grab the 10-22. The fun and games you can have at the 10mm end will leave you with a big silly grin on your face. g.

The other glass is the 70-200mm. I have borrowed a 17-40 several times - it is built like a tank and seems good for being banged around in aeroplane lockers etc! Colour is also sensational. However, I take your point about the fun factor, especially around Queenstown, Tekapo etc! President, A.A.A.A.A (Australian Association Against Acronym Abuse)

Thanks for the input David, yes I did have a quick look at your Tamron and it seems to be a fine lens, especially with F2.8. President, A.A.A.A.A (Australian Association Against Acronym Abuse)

Thirded! Honestly, if I only gave myself permission to travel with two or maybe three lenses it would probably miss out... but since I usually travel with four or five, it always gets a nod. I only travel with one lens, no flash or tripod, no nuthin....ultra light is my way. I have ordered a Canon 10-22mm for my NZ trip and we'll see how it goes! Thanks for the feedback.

What is your future path with bodies?
If you want to go fullframe, the EF-S based 10-22 will have to be sold. I have the 17-40 and love it. My first L and the love affair blossomed (I now have 3 others). You are right too, it is built very well, and the dust/weather sealing is a bonus Also depends if you like super-extreme wide angle look of the 10mm or not. While I like the effect on some photos, for me it doesn't suit every photo. Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes. http://www.dionm.net/
Dion, I'm very happy with the crop sensor 30D, I would love a 5D but I can't see the price dropping any time soon. Seeing the 30D/40D is so fantastically popular around the world, I see no reason for Canon to dump crop cameras in the near future. If I ever move to FF, re-sale value on quality Canon lens is always excellent. As far as the 17-40 is concerned, a good Canon friend has one I can borrow whenever I like (plus 24-105 L). The 17-40 os a wonderful lens but definitely more suited to FF cameras. Thanks for the input! Ozi President, A.A.A.A.A (Australian Association Against Acronym Abuse)

New lens arrives! The courier came this afternoon with a brand new Canon 10-22mm lens. I have only taken a few shots with it but it sure is fun, not to mention W I D E !
I also received via camerasdirect (Gold Coast) a new Canon 135mm F2 L lens. This thing is so sharp at 200% magnification it's incredible. Again, have only taken a few shots in dim light but will get cracking over next few days, schedule permitting, and post a few photos. Re: New lens arrives!
How's that smile on your face? Make sure that you stand near the middle of the road, shooting cars that go past, with the lens set to 10mm. Be sure to stay safe, but pay attention to how close everything looks in the finder. g.
