Cape Otway Lighthouse - extra crop added

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Very nice shot, the black n white really creates a mood of isolation, cold and potential danger.

Nicely done.....

Very moody, on my LCD at work the foreground looks a little dark for me, but this LCD hasn't been calibrated for a while.

Russell

This is a great shot but for me is just a tiny bit cramped on the left hand side. I'm guessing this because there was something there that needed to be avoided that detracted from the image. That aside it's a fantastic example of the use of leading lines and definitely a keeper

That would, of course, make it a "lighthouse keeper"? :D

(Sorry)

I like it too Russell, but agree with Peter's comments re the cramping. I also feel a little more detail teased out of the darker areas may have given more to enjoy. Well done though - those wonky lines along the rails are wonderful!

Thanks a lot Guys for all your comments.

Here is the original crop.
Image

Originally, I trimmed on the LH side + top, to get rid of what I thought was a bit of dead space. I have played around a bit, so the whole image is lighter now, which means the clouds do not look as moody now I think.

All the adjustments to colour and crop etc were done with Bibble. What do people think now? Should I try and darken the clouds more? If so, how would I do that ? Masking and burning?

Thanks for looking once more.

Russell - as you've invited us, in your signature, to help out, here's my quick little go at your great shot. I dodged the highlights and burned the shadow and midtone areas of the sky, used Curves to lighten the midtones of the ground and tweak the overall contrast a bit. I then cleaned up the noise a tad with Noise Ninja.

Image

Happy to remove it if you wish.

Russell - the second version is awesome - it still has the moodiness but is now more balanced.

Simon's rework OTOH is too bright (sorry Simon)

Wow! Impact +++.

I think Russell's reworked version is great - it adds a tad more detail to the black areas which is of benefit to the image.

I also think Simon's rework, although good, is too bright for this particular subject.

Great shot. But the horizon slopes to the right just makes me feel weird. :D
