14 bit is 2.5fps. just out of interest...is this the same case with the 40d ? such a substantial fps reduction ?

For those who are looking at getting the D300, here are some images from a production D300

those hi iso pics using studio lighting are pointless. most of us use hi iso in dimly lit conditions where the light is poor. thats the sort of "test photo" i want to see. even my d80 looks great at iso 1600 shooting in the conditions used in that shoot.

well, that's debatable.... as you want to expose correctly for your subject (whether in bright or dim lighting), and if you have exposed correctly for your subject, what you want in your high ISO images is that the detail, colour saturation etc is preserved for your subject (especially the mid-tones), and you want to see how the shadow areas behave.

You can see the mid-tones and shadow areas in a well lit studio shot - of course it's just that in a dim lighting condition there are more shadow areas (and a lot of the problems people find with 'noise' is that they underexpose their images)

Anyway, here are some more sample ISO 3200 shots from the D300, not taken in a studio (first 3 pics)

My understanding is that those were the conditions at the official launch today at the SOH, complete with the dreaded red lighting.

i take your point, it's not pointless fair enuf however to me its not really a great test and none of them impress me. in all 3 of those you linked to the lighting is still good. like i said, alot of cams can perform very well under those conditions and mask alot noise and other issues. the real test of hi iso imo is in a situation where light is very minimal and you;re shooting at like 1/30s to get the shot you need.

as i mentioned, i've taken scores of photos at iso 1600, (even 3200), with the d80 in broad daylight to keep the shutter speed up to 1/200s or macro work at 800/ 1000 or studio work at 800 and the IQ is excellent under those conditions. its absolutely not the same sort of test as a dimly lit room/ hall where its really testing iso at the very limit.

CF Card is here, and has been UL to my Mac.

I've just had a quick pixel peep at some D300 images @ ISO 800 and 1600, and D3 images @ 3200 and 6400, all shot with the new 14-24.

I have just four words for what I'm seeing: OMFG.

Leigh will be uploading some images later; they're his images so it's appropriate that he does this, and explains the setup etc, but what I'm seeing here far outweighs my expectations.

Hey Gooseberry leave Gary alone he's justifying my excitement and I can't wait to see and read what Leigh has to offer on the D300 particularly. I think the real problem will be the nail biting waiting time to get our hands on stock

I'll go through them later on. I'm just uploading the images to my server in full res.

D300: More impressed than I initially expected. The noise is more floral and takes on the appearance of grain.

D3: Still love it. 6400 is so usable.

Seriously though, anyone who wants a D3 at release time? Good luck. I'll explain later.

It's going to be extremely hard to get either cameras at release date... But I am pretty impressed by the D300 after seeing the production models.

Thanks for that. I'm currently in the US visiting Family, and hoping my D300 arrives before I head home. My lenses (Tokina 12-24, Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 and 80-200 f/2.8 Nikkor) are on the way, so will be able to at least bring back the Glass with me. I can't wait to post some pics!
