D3 - Full Size JPG - ISO 6400 - DUW

Click through for the full size image. It's big, and I apologise for that, but I'm sure that y'all want to see this.

From yesterday's launch, here is one image that Leigh shot that I found impressive. ISO 6400, lens used is the new 14-24 f/2.8, 1/250 @ f/2.8, AWB, no sharpening, no noise reduction. This is straight from the camera.

Holy frickin' Jesus on a tricycle, Gary. That's cleaner than my D200 at 3200, considerably so!! And what noise there is, is much more pleasing, closer to grain than colour noise.

Wedding shooters are going to love this camera.

Yes.

And, out of the camera, it's sharp too. Note that this was shot at 24mm at f/2.8 with the new 14-24; I'm confident that this is not going to be the sweet spot for this lens, so this is truly going to be a significant improvement for all shooters who are able to grab one.

im not sure about everyone else, but I find that black thing (200 flash?) a bit distracting from the intensity of character exhibited by the colourful arrangement of aunty marge's kniting basket...

These are Leigh's images, and while I've taken copies from his CF card, I think it's appropriate that he posts whatever he feels is appropriate.

He did give me permission to post this one, and I selected this because I think its a great example of what we're looking to see from these images.

But he's got lots of other stuff to go through from the day, and I think it's best to be patient and wait to permit him to tell his story.

I'm on my lunch break at the moment. I'm waiting till I get home but I need to label them by hand as EXIF didn't write ISO data when it was using a HI or LO setting so to show you items like 25,600 and whatnot, I'd like to label them first.

I did run one of the JPEG's from 25,600 through one of my custom BW settings and yeah... brilliant.

So later on tonight hopefully. I still think the studio setup was stupid, to be honest.

thats exactly what i was thinking, 800 is the manageable level of noise in the d200 for me.

To be fair, I have gotten some very usable results at ISO 1100, 1200, even 1600 on my D200, providing the exposure is spot on etc. Perhaps a rephrase is appropriate here?

In any case, I'm not really WRONG, just really conservative

Marc, yup. In fact, due to the pointless setup Nikon had for us, using high ISO was pretty much a requirement.

Just downloaded and installed ViewNX onto the Mac.

Some aspects are painfully slow (I probably need to add memory) but we can now read and convert from NEF, and we can also now see the missing ISO information.

And there's a new Picture Control Utility that looks to be somewhat useful: this lets you use a sample image as a starting point, and you can extract the settings and use those settings for other images. Sort of like uploading a custom curve to the D70, but better ..... you can store these settings on your CF card, for instance. Multiple instances of them.

I think this will get those Canon users quivering, lol.

I have a bad case of NAS. This is well known international disease. (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome) I just gone back to work, part time, to help pay for a new D3, plus lenses.
I am patient, and wait on Poon's prices.

Great stuff - they managed to make the noise look almost attractive and desirable as an optional effect. Can you divulge any thoughts on the lens? It has to be a smoking hot package for wides with the D3.
