Anyone used the Nikon MC-36 remote release on the D200?

I figure im going to want to do some slow shutter/cable release work soon, and have been using the infra red remote on the D70 to date.

Has anyone used the MC-36? Im interested to hear from you please

I just use the self timer at the moment...

I use a generic ebay remote on mine, works pretty well. Not many functions though, just half-press/shutter release/hold, but very cheap.

Same, got from poon with another order for like $8.00 or something. Works a treat.

I have both the nikon, and the poon cheapie, get the cheapie, does the job, at 1/3 price.

cant imagine an application for the multi function remote, just get off your ass and read the LCD...

I used to be in the why would you want one school of thought,
after all the cheapie just works.

but

I got hold of a mc36 a while ago in a jumping ship sale at the right price and love it,
just as a cable release, you dont notice a difference,

but at night, when you want exposures of 1 minute and beyond, it beats using your watch and a cable release hands down.

Its backlight means you can set long exposures without needing your torch.

having done that a bit, I find my self wondering why I didnt get one earlier.

I personally havent used the repeat function myself,
but one night prior to owning one, i went out storm chasing and I was taking shot after shot using the watch and cheap remote method,
the guy I was with had the mc-36 and he had his running the camera
with it.
it was taking the pix for him. from memory it was 30 second exposures with maybe 10 seconds between them.

He was looking around at the storm and scenery, I was looking at my watch and missed the view.

I guess in summary I am saying that if you just want a remote for your camera then the cheapy is more than adequate.
if you are looking at shooting lots of longer exposures
go the mc36

Great advice guys - thanks so much. Some food for thought but I will probably end up going with the cheaper one for starters. It seems to be the way all my photography goes. D70 > D200, Sigma 105 macro > Nikon 105 VR, etc

I bought the MC 36 for just this purpose. Well actually taking mini movies of some of the processes building chairs. Then I realised that the D200 has this built in.
Stll it is certainly more convenient. I just have it set permanently. I just plug it in and away we go. I use it now and again as a simple cable release, but I sure do miss the D70's wireless remote.

One day I may also use it for star trails or storm chasing. I used to do a lot of this in the old days, but haven't since the move to digital.

I use an MC20 that I had over from my days with the F5. Works just as good for timing on the D200 as it did with the F5. But timed shots is all it does. No fancy IR or any other features.
