PotW 18.12.07

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

PotW 18.12.07

Postby Glen on Tue Dec 18, 2007 9:41 am

The last PotW for the year and one which will stay up for the remainder of the year. All good reasons to make this choice a good one. As I combed through the images recently posted, one photographer had a large number of high quality postings which kept capturing my attention and I was returning again and again.

Wendell. Our very own Outstanding Member Of The Year. Wendell is almost legendary around here for so many reasons, his extremely high quality directed model images, his willingness to share his craft with others, his good nature, his ability to take good natured ribbing and his ability to break anything photographic.

The image I have chosen is representative of his work, displaying an edgy stylised feel with controlled composition. Excellent.

Wendell, congratulations to our OMOTY

I haven't commented on this image before - only because it's become too difficult to roll out superlatives for Wendell's work. :)

What I am getting, now more than ever, is that Wendell experiments and practices until he has a technique down pat and able to be recreated at will. This is an extremely important component of any sort of photography, but particularly important in fashion shoots where time is of the essence.

The other point that I have noted from both Wendell's work and also his words is the importance of art direction. He is very strong on themes and also on model positioning.

All of this says to me that for photographers, just as for professional sportspeople, talent only takes you so far.

You also need determination, work ethic and a commitment to be the best that you can.

Congratulations Wendell, and this is an excellent pick for PotW.

hi

what i've learned is beign a photographer who innovates means re-learning everything you know over and over, i'm still learning on each shoot

and having a great attitude helps

talent and inspiration only gets you half way

when someone tells me to jump, i dont complain or make up excuses i just say how high and would you like fries with that?

thanks everyone much appreciated

G'day

I am not, and probably never will be in a situation to make meaningful C&C on Wendell's images. However as a watcher and looker I continue to be amazed, impressed and at times blown away with images he presents.

When the recent mini flood of postings by Wendell hit my system, I looked through in awe. When this particular image came on, I knew I'd not seen an image (IMO) that struck me more on this site. That it won POTW is not at all surprising.

Well done Wendell.

Wendell,

It is a long, long time since I have been here or seen your work but this is showing a great maturity in your work. To display the technical skills is one thing but to also exhibit such style and panache is nothing short of exemplary.

A deserved win for a deserving artist.

Cheers,

Indeed, and welcome back, Walter.

Wendell's skills have developed in leaps and bounds since you were last here, to the point whereby he was just annointed as our Outstanding Member of the Year.

Good to see you here; what have you been up to?

And Wendell, the images you posted last week were wonderful examples of your work and developing skills in this art, and this craft, we call photography.

I'm truly glad it wasn't my task to select PotW.
