Nikon 28-70/ 2.8 D AFS

Postby birddog114 on Wed Jan 12, 2005 3:24 pm

Has anyone got or has an opportunity to play with the Nikon 28-70/ 2.8 D AFS.
It's huge and the size is nearly three times of the kit lens 18-70Dx
When you mount it on the D70, you only see the lens, not the camera body. We call it as PJ lens

- Super fast, super sharp.
- Heavy & expensive

It's another Nikon Gem and it has been praised by many PJ and pro-photogs.
Haven't got time to play yet.
P.S: Fozzie, watch out the AP bag tomorrow, it's gone out today.

Hey, it's available in Canon white! ;)

Is it bigger or smaller than the 17-35?

28-70AF-S is available in black and grey white same as 70-200VR and 200-400VR

about 1.1/2 size of the 17-35

This lens was sweet! I was kinda expecting more mass - but having had the pleasure of using pro line tele zooms (eg. 200-400!), and primes like the 28/1.4 and 85/1.4, the 28-70 feels like a relative light weight! The hood is almost the same size as that for the 70-200, and with it on makes the lens & camera combo ridiculously huge and "in yer face". Shoots great pictures, distortion not to be seen anywhere, zoom range isn't all that big: 28mm to 70mm seems lacking compared to the 18-70 kit. Closest focusing and its macro abilities are impressive considering it's exactly not the purpose the lens was designed for! ;)

Oh yeah, the AF-S motor is in another league. Smoother and faster than the kit/24-120 or any other consumer grade/"cheap" AF-S lens.

Bokeh as good as the kit lens from my limited tests - need to test more to pick differences. Sharpness and clarity of images are superb. I got a pic of a coffee label, viewing at 100% small text appears crisp, resolves details extremely well, it's the 70-200 lens of the wide-medium zoom range.
