FRICKIN FRAUD!

Postby Raskill on Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:44 am

DOH!

9 Hours into 2008 and I'm a victim of fraud.

I used my paypal account yesterday for a EBay purchase (lowepro street harness & pouches, woo hoo!) and today I find two unauthorised purchases for 55 euros each for some company called Rapidshare AG, some dubious file hosting company... Not impressed.

I've since changed passwords, security questions and scanned for spyware etc.

Lodged a dispute with Paypal, so I guess I'll see how that goes :?

Bring on 2009.

I had something similar early last year but Paypal debited my VISA card with two transactions to a betting website at a total of $US1400 dollars. My bank rang me up to ask if the transactions were legitimate. I was not impressed. My bank sorted that one out and I got my money back and I changed cards.

I refuse to use Paypal for anything now. I had only used it once before and that was way back in 2003 so I don't know how they got my VISA card number as it would have expired since then. (I imagine Paypal was not responsible for the transaction, they were the third party between whoever had my credit card details and my bank, but it was still a Paypal transaction)

I'm still baffled at how anyone could have gotten my Visa card details as I only used that one for things like Bpay. (I blame Telstra, but I can't prove it. I just have a feeling.)

Then I discovered this website;
http://www.paypalsucks.com/

Now for internet purchases I only use a credit card with 500 limit on it or a prepaid Bopo card for more dubious sites.

I hope you get your 55Euros back. :)
Steve.

Cheers mate. Isaw that paypalsucks.com. website once before. Interesting reading. I guess it's not a bad system, just has some annoying aspects.

For example, my account has now been frozen. Not the account of the company that has made the transaction, mine.

We'll see how it pans out, all up it was just short of $200 out of my account. I use a VISA debit, so keep only a small amount of dollars in that account.

Thats gotta suck Alan, if they don't do anything about it you can always go through your bank. They are pretty good with things like that (the bank). Although Paypal will ban your CC number from now on...

most australian banks self insure against this. most likely your Visa/Mastercard, will entitle you to an immediate refund, and the bank will pursue it for you, no forms...!

Bankcard are not as well set up for fraud.

Could be wrong, but I think Bankcard was phased out at the beginning of 2007.

Sorry to hear about the dramas Raskill. Hope it all works out in the end mate.

As they should. Once people report things like this happening to them, the whole system loses credibility. Paypal are better off taking the hit immediately.

Indeed I am. It was only $200, but right now thats a bit for me to lose.

Reading the emails they sent, it appears the refund was given by the file hosting company to paypal and passed to me. It would appear that the file hosting company are, at the end of the day, the victims. I was just the means to make them the victims. Oh well.

Geez that cracked me up.

Well done with the outcome on Paypal. They've been around for long enough to want to keep a reputable name. Surely you would suspect here in Australia, things with PP should be trustworthy enough.

Keep your trojans and spyware blockers up to date... Maybe a keylogger got your PP details?
My sistewr has been to visit, now I am busy getting rid of all sorts of nasties out of my PC... In the mean time, another computer for important online stuff...

My spyware was up to date. It just wasnt turned on

I scanned after the fact, and found a nasty little trojan that would have been responsible, but my computer is now cleaner than a nuns conscience.

That WONT happen again. :?
