D3 image of Kings Pier Marina (Cropped)

This is an image of Kings Pier Marina, next to Constitution Dock in Hobart. Most of the larger Sydney Hobart yachts are tied up here.

Taken with D3 and 20/2.8 lens.

It was an overcast sky, so I exposed for the sky so as to not blow it. I pretty much used just a quick Shadows/Highlights in CS2 to fix the image up.

What I am finding with the D3 is that you can get away with a very underexposed shot and you don't get any horid noise when you correct it. The other thing I've found so far is that the JPG straight out of the camera is bloody good. The NEF had a bit of CA and after a fair bit of PP of the NEF the original JPG was still better. So I threw away the NEF and kept the JPG. The Expeed processor in the camera (and in the D300) seems to do a whole lot better than I can do with PhotoShop and a darn sight quicker as well. This camera is going to dramatically cut down the time I spend on the PC in Photoshop. :) :)

Cheers
John

I love the contrasts and the symmetry of this image.

That D3 of yours is singing with your skills. ;)

John,

Seems like you're enjoying your new toy.

I suspect that the reflections are a part of what attracted you to the this image, but I'd like to see a crop of this with most of the reflections taken out.

I think that would be a very different, but equally attractive, image.

And I'd like to see a full size version of this image. This is just so good in the way it's posted here, I'd love to see your raw material. :)

Thanks for the comments guys. I am just so impressed with this camera. the next thing I'll be trying is recording TIFFs. That should give all the detail of the NEFs but with the added bonus of the in camera processing.

Cheers

The same image but slighly cropped as suggested. Does it work better than the original?

I prefer the cropped version to the original. I find the original too 'busy' when you can see more of the reflected masts.
I'll try to be a bit nicer, if you try to be a bit smarter.

John

I really liked this image when I first saw it but didn't make any me too comments (little value in this case) and was unsure if the suggested crop would work. Now I've seen it I agree - the cropped version is a better take on the scene

Thanks Peter and LadyBird. Removing those reflected masts certainly makes the image look less busy. Great suggestion Gary. :)
