Syd Fest 08 1st Night - Brutality WelcomeThese are from last night at Sydney Festival's First Night. I am new to canon (have 40D). I was going to try manual exposures for the night, but the lighting was just too mixed with spotlights and coloured lights everywhere, I couldn't keep up. Any CC appreciated.
I feel a bit mean posting this, but it was actually cute. He was filming the red carpet weddings on his phone. I know this is very soft, but I liked the composition. Is there a magical gel to counter these WB situations? I was trying to get it all in, but 24 on crop not so hot. I await a sigma 14mm. Again, mostly blurred, but I like some elements. Out of all of them I like number 3 the best. Great sense of movement and really capture the mood of the moment.
The first one, too, is a great candid shot but what ISO were you shooting with, as it is a bit noisy around the darker areas (could also be JPEG artifacting). The thrid, is good, but again too noisy or artifacty. Perhaps try some noise reduction in PP or if you can afford it, grab Noise Ninja and use that. Cheers.
The first is great!... but my personal favourite would have to be the last... it just goes to show that sometimes you just have to break all the rules to get that one magic shot...

I was shooting at ISO 800 for the first, but I did a second raw conversion with more of the shadows lifted towards quater tones and masked it off, so that is why the horse is noisy. 1600 for all of the others. But at f 2.8, I was always around 1/30th handheld with people moving everwhere, so my only other choice is to go to the HI setting and have more noise, or use faster glass, which I do not, yet, posess. I agree a pass of noise ninja would work a TREAT, I used the ACR noise option, but it is pretty crap so I backed it off. I am amazed by the amount of highlight recovery available on the 40D. I am thinking of adjusting to continually use +.3 or even more, just to keep the shadows and recover the highlights later. This is the opposite of my experience with the trusty D70s.
