Moorilla Tennis - Qualifying

The Moorilla International is a Tier IV Womens Tennis tournament held in Hobart each year. I watched Jelena Dokic win her third round qualifying game today to get into the main tournament. She beat the Russian Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2 6-3. Jelena is in the pink dress.

80-400VR at 400mm on D3, ISO 400, f7.1 - f8.

Sure are. I was hoping you'd get there again this year. You've captured Helena's determination perfectly.

You really have the D3 singing!! Love the second shot. Wonderful action. I would just like to see the full racket head. But that is just being picky.

#2 (Top right) is wonderful, concentration of the eyes to the ball and the action of the player and racket is... all together, wonderful

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've updated the original post with links to this years and previous years tournaments. I found it interesting looking back thru the old shots. In my opinion the better ones are the "in your face" shots rather than the wider ones, even if some of the player or racket is cropped with the close in shots.

I've got a lot of learning about the D3 to do. The first days shots (of this years tournament) were shot at ISO 1000 at f8. Exposure times were a squillionth of a second. At this setting I was loosing a bit of quality in the skin tones. The next day (includes those images posted above) were at ISO 400 at f7.1 - f8 and still very short exposures, most faster than 1/2000. I'll be back there tonight, the light won't be as severe, but I'll be trying ISO 200 and trying to stay faster than 1/1000. We'll see how they turn out. I'll be concentrating on eyes, racket and ball and getting in really close.

I have media accreditation this year, so can get quite close to the players. The shutter at 9fps seems louder than the D200 shutter. I got the evil eye once from the serving player after a burst of shots in close while she was serving.

Cheers
John

You've got some great shots in your gallery, and there is a marked improvement in my opinion as you go from the older stuff to the more recent.

How are you enjoying Medibank Michael? Just got home, Jelana retired with an injured ankle 5 games into the first set.
