All round lens for a D70/D80

Postby whitey on Wed Jan 16, 2008 9:31 pm

Hi

I am looking to pick up a second hand D70 and am wondering what sort of lens would be best as an allround day to day lens. Would mainly be used for picks of the kids around the house, some cityscapes and landscapes. I would like to spend ~400-500 and am happy to buy second hand.

Thanks Guys

In my opinion, a good all-round lens (i.e. stays on the camera 90% of the time) would be the 18-200VR if you are after a zoom. Covers landscape, portrait, and some longer shots.

cheers

The 18-70DX that came as a kit lens with the d70 is also a bloody good lens for the price, and works well as a general walkaround lens :)

I'll go with the 18-70 as the first choice (and meet your price range), the 18-200 VR is a great lens as well, just outside your price range though. I love the 18-70 on the D70 and D200 both and until I get some fantastic wide - mid range zoom that will be the one I use.

Cheers

That's the 18-70 kit lens all right. All round a great lens for the dollars.

That's the 18-70 kit lens all right. All round a great lens for the dollars. But as noted above, the dollars for this one are a bit high.
You should be able to get it for a fair bit less, maybe around tghe $250-$300 mark second hand.

I'll also say the 18-70 great bit of kit for the price. Even check out fleabay , but dont pay "that" price for it new.

You could even look at some of the Sigma/Tamron/Tokina f2.8's if you are happy to buy 3rd party. Some of them have a good reputation for price.

Even through in a WTB ( Wanted to Buy) maybe someone has upgraded and has a 18-70 sitting around.

Thanks Gary, xerubus, johnd and MATT.

I will pop down to the camera shop and see if I can test one out - and dont worry I will be looking for a sharp price. Been reading a few reviews and this lens looks like it could be a nice start for me.

Appreciate you taking the time to assist me.

I'd say:
$300-350 for like new conditions
$300 for very good
$200-250 for fair conditions

+1 for 18-70 DX

Had this on my old D70 and would be my #1 choice in your price range.

However if you can stretch to the 18-200 VR then go for it. In any case you will be happy with the 18-70 DX.

ROTFLMAO.

I'm sorry, James. That's just a concept I've never ever considered. I do understand what you're saying, and I know what you're shooting ... but to see it expressed in this manner is something I find rather amusing. :)
