1st Take on Food PhotographyMany thanks to all the member supports on tips/hints, I did my first shoot in food photography.
Photos were taken for a small food-court restaurant, for their upfront display of what you're ordering... Green Curry Chicken Mongolian Beef Beef Meat Ball Rice Noodle Tomato & Beef Rice Comments & Critiques mostly welcomed!!
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyThey all look delicious. If they do home delivery to the far south coast I'll take them all...maybe a double serve of the mongolian beef...yum
Minor minor nitpicks #1. The sauce is right up to the brim and there is a little spillage on one of the handles. I think it would look a liitle better without the sauce being right up to the edge of the bowl. #4. Maybe have the leafy thing ...coriander or parsley or whatever it is...showing its other side which would be a little more colourful and shiny, and match the spring onions.
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyNice work Yip, I agree with Simon's suggestions but overall they look declious has your clients seen them yet ? Are they thrilled with the job ?
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyYip,
they look great, very nice and sharp and great lighting on them, well done. My minor nitpick is the creases in the tablecloth. When you have the tablecloth bunched up like in the last two, that works, it looks like that's the look you wanted. The first two have some creases in them which look a bit out of place. Didn't anybody warn you to bring and ironing board? I'm sure they will love them, well done. Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyWell done mate. They look really really good and well presented
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyThanks for all the comments
I will have to PP the spilled sauce on #1 ( I didnt see that when doing the shoot, maybe it just turned up on camera. ) About the cloth, totally agreed, I was too carried on with the shoot at start and didnt notice the little detail in the background, but later on I figured out my mistake, but it was too late to take a 2nd go Learned the lesson in a hard way... For the lighting, I got to thank Ron for lending me his light light. You're life saver man I had my tips from my previous post on "Food Photography - Tips Needed" Yeah, nobody told me to bring iron and ironing board... It's all nothing too fancy, 3 lights set up and a tent... Food were set up in Ron's LARGE 80cm light-tent, using a small red cloth as background. As this was on location shoot, I'm limited to use only speedlights. I used 3 Speedlights for this set up. 1x SB800 + 2x SB28. All flashes were off camera, triggered using a little modded Poon's wireless trigger, worked like a charm, 100% hit rate. SB800 were set up behind the tent, 2 SB28 were set up on both sides, one higher and one on food's level. I mainly focused on the reflection of the dishes and greases, making sure they all look appetising. Had to move the side SBs around for different shots so that reflections given is the best. I think they were all shot at ISO 100 @ F/11
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyNice work. Good use of props. The beef ball and rice noodles looks spot on.

Yeah. The beef one was the one that made my mouth water D80, 50mm F/1.8, 18-70mm DX, Sigma 10-20mm
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyI'll take a mongolian lamb, to go!
Nice work. I think they'll look great up on a menu board, certainly better than a lot I have seen in various food courts around Sydney.
Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographySounds like we should have a mini meet there to sample the fare.

Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyWell done Yi-P! Your colour arrangements are excellent and make the food look exciting.

Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyThe first concept in food photography has to be ”would I like to eat what I see” - the answer from your pics Yip is a resounding yes
From experience I now look at what I am shooting very carefully before firing the shutter - except for a couple of quirks (the curry on the handle), your results are first class. Chris

Re: 1st Take on Food PhotographyVery well done, Yip. The food looks very inviting, complemented by the props, colours and lighting without me being distracted by it. You have a achieved a focal point on the food without making plain images of just food on bright white backgrounds.
