sb-600

I bought a sb-600 from b&h in about may last year for about $290.
use it on the odd occassion for social / band promo photos.
In december, i went to melbourne for a few weeks and a friend had a wedding on, but her camera hadnt arrived with her belongings from when she relocated from canberra, so i lent her my gear for the wedding.

When i got back - i picked up the gear, and on Xmas day - i went to use the flash - and it wouldnt turn on!?! try fresh batteries and it still wouldnt work. I asked my friend what happened and she said she didnt even use it in the end, but she would pay for any repairs

So i've taken it in to Adelaide Technical Cameras for repair and the guy said he had to send sydney and it will prob be month+ ARGH!?!

So the irony is, i have a wedding now on sat

has anyone else had troubles with their sb-600?

is there a manual/mechanical style (pin in a hole) reset button?

Check the battery chamber for any battery leaks or corrosion.

yeah i did check all that - no corrosion or anything - the guy at the repair place said it was something to do with the fuse / oscillator?

I had almost exactly the same issue but with an sb800.

I had it repaired at a Nikon certified repairer (Camera Clinic) and it was the battery connection was broken.

Funnily enough it was after I had lent it to a friend for a wedding she was going to shoot.

Moral of the story don't lend your stuff out.

That's a bummer. I would have said they were indestructible.
Mine has been lost in a cave, even dropped in a river for a second or two in the Kimberley. Scratched and beat up.
I doubt there is much you can do except check the obvious, battery contacts etc...

I am going to purchase one today.

I've read a few reviews on them and they seem pretty good. I mean they're only $279 versus the $487 for the SB800 which I'm sure is a much better flash but do I need it? I just want an entry level/decent flash that I can use off camera as well as on.

The 600 is good, I started with one, but now have an 800 also.

If you are thinking of any off camera use, I would be tempted to go the 800, which combined with a 600 (or two) would allow some very good creative freedom for off camera use.

I agree that the 800 is the pinicle at the moment for what I want but unfortunately the financials put it a touch out of reach. The plan is to have a few off camera flashes and use the 600 as the lead. See how we go.

I'll grab one and let you all know how I go.
