New release with details on the web. Now that would be some wildlife lens - the price will be interesting

Very impressive 2.8 at 500mm, but it will require a few gym workouts at 15kg

So it will only come in a Canon mount then?

I would imagine that anyone using this lens would be in dire danger from being shot by our security forces. I’m not really saying that they can’t tell the difference between a rocket launcher and a lens, or am I

And would you use a tripod mount on the lens or the camera body

Never mind the size/weight, what about the shipping cost from Poon

I've been thinking of uses for this lens...based on the account that:

a) you haven't been killed from a trigger happy security force
b) you still have energy after lugging this bad boy to the shooting location

Uses:
- Wildlife conservationists can now spot the poachers in African national parks from the comfort of an office
- Taking candid photos from the next suburb
- Zooming in on Federer's nose at the next Oz Open from the Holden Blimp

It'll decrease the risk of injury as well for the Papps who run into the middle of the road to take photos of the celebs as the distance will increase allowing them time to get out of the way of the cars...unless they get anchored down by the lens.

Can you imagine panning this lens at the next race? Hell this thing makes the Bigma look like a french fry!

According to Sigma:

Sigma Corp. wrote:The dedicated Li-ion battery BP-21 is used to power the zooming and AF operation. This battery is built in the lens barrel. For the convenience of the photographer, focusing distances and focal lengths can be viewed on the lens` built-in LCD panel.

So this big boy needs its own feed of power, and the little LCD screen that tells you everything... haha interesting!

If price were not a problem I'd rather buy that than the 300-800. 16 Kg is not heavy, you :chook:

He ain't heavy,
He's my Sigma! BTW, it comes with its own 2x TC, making it also a 200-1000 f/5.6.

NASA just rang up, and wondered if anyone has found the Hubble Space telescope. They think it has fallen out of orbit, and come back to earth ...

Don't worry ...

They found it at the Sigma factory ...

No, but by the time you add a camera body, tripod and backpack you're going to be well over 25kg even if you buy lightweight stuff. I've gone bushwalking with a 25kg pack and it ain't fun. So 90% of the users are going to need more than a tonne of accessories just to get the lens to where they want to use it. That makes it a very expensive toy...

Although it would look cool mounted on top of my four-wheel touring bike... I wonder if they sell a PTZ motorised mount for it?
