Ok - stop and look closely at this image ... can you see the hands under the skin near the middle of the body ????? The frog is possessed !!!!!

Image

all right, not possessed, but I bet you didn't know that frogs develop their back legs first, and the front legs actually develop within the body cavity - you can see them pressing up against the skin on the underside of the tadpole. The front legs then 'pop out' of the body a between a day and a few days (depending on species) before the tadpole comes out on land as a metamorph. Once they have emerged, they will sit for a little (ie a day or 2) while while they absorb their tail, and then hop off to wherever they are supposed to be :) Always amazes me that their guts don't spill out with the legs

That is an amazing picture, thanks for sharing it.
I think frogs are one of the most incredible creatures on Earth, and this picture proves it.
Even more amazing to me than how the legs grow is how the mouth parts change
to enable a vegetarian tadpole to become a carnivorous frog! :D

I think that you must be having a second childhood Rel. I haven't played with tadpoles since I was in primary school :) Interesting image.

Awesome photo Rel. One of the things I love about your posts isn't just the great images we get to see, but the detailed explanations that go with them to enrich our understanding of the amazing natural world around us.

Thank you everyone ;) LOL

It is the tadpole of the graceful or dainty tree frog, Litoria gracilenta :) - distinguished by the oral disk - the lines on the mouth.

Aszental wrote:whats the lines on the front of the cover?
- Aszental, are you referring to the mouth ???? Or the lines on the belly- you can see the intestine, gut, lungs developing etc ....

We are actually getting the images together for a small publication - part of a grant application we did, so we need photos of tadpoles. I have a very small aquarium (15cmx15cm) where I put the taddies that we need shots of. If you wait for a while, they start doing their thing, and will often come up the side of the tank with their belly facing outward - that is when this shot was taken :) They are then returned to the pond they came from :) I promise, no taddies were harmed in the making of this photo :) :) :)

Thanks again - sorry if you are all sick to death of frogs btw :)
