...taken with limited gear. 300mm plus might have been nice. Any thoughts?

Oh its stunning! I've seen a lot of moon shots but this one stands out above so many of the others due to the blackness of the sky (gotta be something said for living where there is no ambient light at night) and the wisp of cloud... I really like it.. a lot... *nods*... :)
The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list... ;)

This is a gorgeous image. I've had a few cracks at the moon in my film days with no success. This has a fantastic mood to it, probably different to different people, but I can see it as part of a sort of creatures of the night with a romantic twist... which makes me sound like a crazy person. I guess I am

I love the way it looks like the whispy cloud is coming up to embrace the moon !!!!

Thank you girls and guys,

I was a little concerned that it would not be up to snuff. Not quite full, hot spots... It was taken during a thunderstorm as a distraction to my unsuccessful attempts at lightening shots. The cloud cover was actually very heavy and variable enough to have the meter swinging full scale. Rooz got it in one. It is a composite of two images from the same bracket.

Cheers

yeah, thought so. i shoot the moon a fair bit so i know its impossible to get the exposure right in one go for both clouds and moon.

you know what though. i have seen the composite done many times but people tend to go for too much and it looks either too fake or too over the top. what you did is you made it subtle and believable. its one of the best moon images i have seen. really, really very well done.

Rooz,

All that I did was put the two images into two layers in PS (cloud over moon I think) and use a layer mask and a soft-ish brush to edit out the bits that I did not want. Nothing more. I did have a slightly noisy cloud layer which was fixed with a little gaussian blur. That had a beneficial effect of softening the clouds a little ("whispy" effect?) which I probably would have done regardless.

I know what you mean about sometimes overdoing it and I take a minimalist approach to editing; sometimes to a fault.
