I love the 70-200 2.8 VR, but I'd like more reach plus the price leaves me cold. Similarly, I love the reach (and price) of the 80-400 VR, but would prefer AF-S and maybe a slightly better maximum aperture.
What I would like to see is a (approx) 100-300 VR f4 AF-S lens. I would imagine they could probably knock one up for about the cost of the 70-200 2.8 VR. Slightly smaller maximum aperture (cheaper to produce) but about the same zoom ratio of the 70-200. It would go lovely with the 1.4TC giving 420mm at an acceptable f5.6.
But then again, what would I know, I'm just a dumb shmuck with money burning a hole in his pocket that could be in the pocket of the Nikon Corporation
