They look like extremely low light stuff - your trademark gritty B&W. But there's a tremendous lack of noise compared to what I remember of your past D70 stuff.

This is 6400 on the D300... and I think I'm pushing the limits of what 6400 is on the camera to be honest.

I didn't want to fire the flash... it would ruin the light in his eyes.

Yeah right - of the five images, the third one shows part of one eye, the others are eye free.

FWIW, I love the grain and noise, they add to the feel of the captutes, all in all I find them very emotive and they portray such a feel that I can almost hear the playing. Great shots.

Ok. Let me say it like this: I was using a Tamron 18-250. This isn't a good lens so I don't exactly have the fastest of shutter speeds and apertures to choose from. While the easy way out would be to fire the flash and be done with it, that would ruin shots with light in his eyes as well as the tone of his face and the mood of the evening.

People that know me know that the only flash I like is a studio flash but I'll do available light wherever I can.

Great shots Leigh, the D300 over the D70 will certainly make thing kind of photography (something you excel at) that little bit easier, in B&W the ISO doesn't really become much of an issue for you.

1. This is a great shot, love the emotion on Nigel's face.
2. Shadows seem a little harsh, better emotion than the first, but not as good a shot for lighting, if that makes sense.
3. Nice! Good lighting. This is my fav of the series.
4. Good side profile shot here.

I like the processing and grain, I'm guessing that you have used Alien Skin? if so do you mind sharing what setting you used for these.

I'm not going to review the 5th on as you have exceeded the Image posting guidelines by posting it.
Just kidding mate, it's great too, although the shadows are a little harsh in this one too. In all, a great series considering the challenges I imagine you faced with lighting and composing these shots in a dimly lit venue.

I actually used a combination of the new Nik Colour 3 which is actually very good and the BW Styler which I normally use (using presets based off of how I used to work in the darkroom... which I've begun to give out... in very small numbers...)

Cheers for the comments all. I got more good ones than I thought I would with something around 50 good B&W's from a badly lit gig (as far as photography was concerned... and not using blech-flash).
