CF cards for the D300

Postby radar on Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:20 am

With all the D300's out there, some of you may wonder which card is best. This really only gets to be an issue if you do long sustain fast bursts, eg sport or wildlife photography.

The link below points to a photographer's personal experience with a few different cards. Certainly if you want speed, UDMA cards are the way to go, but you probably already knew this

I will be going 2 x 8GB.

Using Harris Technology as a gauge:
2 x 4GB Extreme IV: $258
1 x 8GB Extreme IV: $229

Whilst I was happy with 4Gb cards for the D200, I decided that the larger file sizes (especially if you shoot 14 bits) justified the 8Gb card. There will be times when I shoot at 12 bits, but it looks like most of my photography will be at 14 bits now.

A 4Gb card only gives you 150 shots at RAW plus 14 bits.

Thanks Andre, it is hard to find anything on the D300 speeds, especially with Galbraith not updating for the D300

heh!
2x 8GB is even better! if only i had the money lying around for them..
for what you do, i guess the more images you can store on one card, the better since u cant change cards underwater!

for my goldfishness, i think 2x4GB would be a better idea :)

I reckon that is plenty. To double the capacity to 8GB, prices can jump from sub $50 to more than $250.

Not if you compare the same make/model and buy a decent brand.

If you go for Extreme IV, an 8GB card will be less than double the cost of a 4GB card as I already posted. Oh and the 8GB card is less than $250.

I went for 2x4GB Extreme IV cards plus a 120GB Picture Porter Elite. That way I can download as much as I need, even on a trip and if you keep buying more cards you'll probably end up spending pretty well as much.

I have two of these 8Gb 266x speed from Transcend. They are priced very well compared to the popular Sandisk ones. the 266x really helps in transferring files to the computer. I shoot in RAW 14-bit uncompressed so the files are like ~25Mb and I can still transfer 6GB in a couple minutes or so. not too bad.

Extreme Ducati's FTW and get the Extreme FireWire Reader

For the record I manage an average of 120 14-bit RAW + Large Fine JPEG on 4GB
