Absolute cracker...how far from the lens element was the fly? Was it alive? How many shots did you take to get this one?

Thanks for the comments guys.

The fly was around 15cms from the front of the lens (guessing).

The fly was very much alive. It was still early in the day so it was quite sluggish and stayed put for ages, even after I had finished taking photos.

Not sure how many shots I took of this guy. Probably around 10 or so. Most of them turned out well though due to the fact that he was quite still. Also, there was very little wind blowing which helped also.

I think I used a shutter speed of just 1/10 or so for these shots (can't remember exactly) to let plenty of background light in.

I'd be happy to answer any more questions you might have :)

First shot is indeed tack sharp. I wonder if it's possible to take these kinda shots with my tamron 90mm since it requires much closer range.

Definately possible!

It will be harder work to get closer to the insect without scaring it off.... but it is certainly do-able.

If you take a look at Mark Plonsky's work (http://www.pbase.com/mplonsky/insects) you will see how close he can get. Among other things he uses reversed lenses and that can require a working distance of under 2cms at times.
