This week's Picture of the Week is an uncommonly wonderful image of a Common Dolphin, as shot by John D.

Please take a moment to visit the original thread, and then go and have a look at the larger versions of this image, as well as the others that were taken at the same time. Look at the detail, the water on the skin of the dolphin, the clarity and acuity of these images. Don't overlook the difficulty of shooting from on the water, nor the fact that the exposure has been nailed, Well and truly nailed.

Wow, I just logged in and I saw my pic on the front page. I am truly humbled that you think that much of it.

This was really a hard shot to get. There were so many dolphins darting around and they were only out of the water for less than a second at a time. After shooting a heap of empty water or only tail splashes, I started tracking a dolphin while he was under water. The water is so clear down here in the ocean off the south coast of Tasmania I could make out his shape enough to track him even thru the glare. Anyway this sequence was a result of grabbing the dolphin being tracked. I got 4 frames off shooting this guy at 9fps before he disappeared and the skipper decided we'd seen enough.

Anyone how comes to Tasmania without going out on one of these 3 hour ECO cruises will be making a big mistake. I won't take much convincing to go out again with you. (hint for visiting DSLRusers).

Congrats John. It's a great image. I've snapped off a few thousand clicks trying to get something similar over the years and never got even close to one this good.

Steve, I'll get around to posting some of my shots of the sea cliffs from down in close to Tasman Island and Cape Pillar. I know you've been round that way a few times yourself. We were like 5 metres from the seacliffs. Shooting almost straight up. The skipper was talking about some navy guys who'd recently come on this ECO cruise. He said that even though they'd been operating around the area many times before, they were blown away by how awesome it is up close. Next time you're down this way, I would recommend the trip. Leaves from Port Arthur and finishes at Pirates Bay 3 hours later.

Sounds like a great idea. Do they return the passengers to PA? It's a long walk from Pirate's bay :)

Yep, they bus you back to PA as part of the deal. Actually some of the trips start from Pirates Bay and go to PA (depending on the sea conditions), in which case they bus you from their shop in PA to Pirates Bay, then boat you to PA.
