IR filter

I am trying to use a generic IR filter with my 350D... I can't seem to get any pictures that I can see. What am I doing wrong? Don't tell me it's the camera body

Try adding +3 or 4 stops exposure compensation. Turn the metering mode to spot metering. Adjust your exposure to get a good histogram. Work from a tripod. Shoot at f11 or f16 and whatever shutterspeed the camera chooses.

As well as matt's suggestions you could help the colour cast a bit when you do get images you can see..

Take a photo- (it'll probably be pretty red) then use that image as your custom WB and you should get some nice useable colours, although you can still do B&W conversion in post processing.

Typically my exposures on a 400D with a Hoya R72 are around 1 second @ f8,iso 400. Obviously this varies according to how much direct sunlight is being captured. Just keep checking the dispaly and changing till you get it.

Thanks for your help...took my first photo that I could actually see...unfortunately was caught without a tripod so didn't come out sharp. At least the exposure was reasonable..
