Canon Australia price drops

While at work yesterday, the account manager from Canon came in for several hours trying to make the 2 cabinets look nice, so we chatted a bit and throughout the many phone calls that he had, he got one from his boss saying that there are some price drops for the DSLR bodies that are "effectively and immediately",

Canon 40D: $1499
Canon 400D: $790

He wrote some other price drops on the list too but I didn't get to see the others, so I don't know which ones they are...

Given the rumours regarding a possible upcoming 5D replacement, it would be interesting to know whether there was movement at that station, as it were.

Canon have taken a real hit from Nikon in the past few months ... not only have Nikon finally pulled better camera out of the bag with the D3 and D300, they have also started to assume some of the market share again at the serious end of town. On the other side of the equation though, I feel Canon prices have been too high for too long.

Merely a statement regarding the prices of pro bodies & glass by BOTH Canon & Nikon.

I hardly think it would 'hurt' canon. Maybe if 40 newspapers dropped them with 400 photographers each.

Well there are cases everywhere in the world preferring the D3 for photojournalist than the Canon. And I do think Canon is still number 1 in the world but Nikon is number 1 in Asia, which has the biggest potential market.

My friend who recently came back from Japan said more Nikons than Canon and also more film cameras than digital.

These prices are very keen, and I think a reaction to the success that the D40 and D300 are seeing in the market. The D40 remains the top selling DSLR in the world.

I'm also wondering if price reductions of this magnitude - I need to see if HK prices will be reducing as a result - might be indicative of imminent new models?

Well the 450D should be available in about two weeks but those two models that dropped in pricing would still be present in the model lineup, so I don't know, and the successor to the 5D (which SO many of you are waiting for) is going to be around Olympics or Photokina time, we'll see if the Canon rep lies.

And I always liked the 40D, don't know why it wouldn't sell well, and it's not even close in specs to the 400D... well I guess I can blame the ignorant first time buyers getting bombarded with positive information to buy the 400D.

In the world market? I believe it's the D40/D40x. It's just been walking out of the stores in most world markets. It's been the hottest camera - DSLR or PHD - in Asia for months on end. Hell, even Nikon Oz are getting into marketing, with a TV ad for the D60 being screened in Oz now.

Right, I always forget about the 5D successor won't be a sports camera. Or I guess Canon will just be releasing a 1D3 with ALL the AF problems fixed...

And yes, Canon has always done minor tweaks to their lower end models and then release it as a new camera, maybe their way of doing things has finally caught up to them, that is "upgrading" the models without really upgrading them. Although the 40D does have sensor cleaning, bigger screen, better AF and slightly more megapixels compared to the 30D.

Although the most shocking of all has to be the 30D as an upgrade to the 20D... It's the same freaking camera...

Well actually I disliked it when they released the D60, but then I tried out the high iso noise since it's still the D200/D80's ccd chip, and the EXPEED processor nonsense did do pretty well to the noise issue.

I guess the 20d/30d case is an anomaly, I thought Canon had gone insane. BTW, had gone to Sony video camera training at the Mercure hotel, their BIONZ and EXMOR (or something) processor is kind of... I guess my intuitive feeling is that they got some of the parts from Nikon. Because one of their new video camera is using a 3 inch 918000 dots LCD screen afterall...

Leigh went to a Sony Dog and Pony on Monday. He came away amazed.

At the total absence of any technical acumen of the people running the event. They felt that attendees needed a map of the three different display areas, so they would know what was where. Three stands, in the one room. I think even Stevie Wonder would not have too many issues in that setting.

Yeah I have to agree with this statement. For a while I was tempted to upgrade to a 40D. But after playing around with my brothers one and comparing ISO noise and some 'nice' featues, I figured it wasn't worth spending $1400. Im going to sit tight and see what a new model 5D will bring. Hopefully its so good that the old 5D will come down significantly in price that I can buy that one (wishful thinking)

I thought the 40D was a big jump over the 30D. I was/am a 10D owner, and the 20D and the 30D I didn't see as useful upgrades, but the 40D was a significant jump over the 30D.

Now, I probably wouldn't have upgraded from a 30D to a 40D, but single increment upgrades are a bit ridiculous, IMHO.

Well it depends on how you use the camera and weighing if those new features are important to you.

One thing I really liked about the 40D was that it felt great holding it. My pinky finger was no longer hanging catching air time. It was actually gripping the 40D.

Hopefully the price drops from Canon would encourage more sales but time will tell.

The irony is that Sony is the best video camera maker now, and their Vegas Pro 8 software is amazing, if not better than the Mac's Final Cut Studio.

And since I predict them to be number 3 in DSLR this year (over shadowing Olympus) and they won the Blu-ray war, they're in very good shape.

ANYWAY, I'd like see what price I can get the 40D for at my workplace...

We were assured by the regional manager from Canon that the 5D won't be replaced but they are offering a free Canon M80 for every 5D or the 5d, 24-105 kit bought.

And then those RUMOURS of 22nd March announcements... which should be today or yesterday...

If you need a camera now the 5D will not disappoint you! At its current price for full frame goodness and excellent high ISO handling it is a steal! At the moment all the rumors relating to the 5D II are just that. For me I'm going to wait and see what will eventuate down the track. But in your situation if you need a camera now, get one. If you can wait then it could be long or short wait.

As usual with this stuff there are now oddities... a 450D is ~$1300 street retail, a 40D is ~$1400, but you can buy the 40D right now. My coworker looks likely to buy a 40D as her first DSLR... I gotta upgrade
