Skyfire 2008

Postby Merkyone on Sun Mar 16, 2008 12:19 am

As promised, a few pics from the Skyfire fireworks tonight. Pity about the bridge...I was under the impression there was going to be several firework launching sites (including along the bridge) but alas, there wasn't so I ended up with a bridge in the way. Oh well.

I found the Greens and blues difficult to capture; I seem to have far more success with the reds/pinks/golds.

Comments welcome.

It is a bit of a shame about the bridge, but they turned out nicely anyway. I couldn't get to this because i had a footy camp on, and I'm really bummed about it. How was it? How long did it go for?

IIRC...it was about 20 mins, maybe a little less.

Nice shots there libertyterran. Looks like you had a pretty good spot around Regata point.

Yeah definitely. I've tried before without much success. The results this time are much better.

For anyone who wants some tips, I was sitting on f11 for between 1 and 3 seconds. Anything longer than that starts to overexpose the fireworks (the photos also get 'busy'), anything under leaves you with very short 'tracers' on the fireworks. Make sure you set your focus to manual (timing is everything). Remote shutter release is also a must.

A bit of research is also handy (wind direction, time of kick-off, the location of bridges and other crap in the way.....).

Very nice images, guys.

Yes, Adam, fireworks are like lightning. Tripod, bulb setting on manual, remote or cable release.

I did Skyfire a couple of times when I worked in Canberra but found it frustrating becaus ethey never stick to the advertised time.

My technique has always been well stopped down and I just hold the cable release till one or two bursts have gone off. It's great fun and easy to get good results once you get the hang of it.

Haven't tried that....thanks, I'll give it a go. I suspect that will improve my success rate somewhat.
