The message that Kris put up with a photo he took of the harbour bridge at night -see: "This is very hard

" reminded me of the way we used to do it in the old days of film. We set the camera on a tripod, took a double exposure an hour or so apart, the first one at dusk while there was still some colour in the sky and the second when all the city lights were on.
With digital as far as I know we don't have double exposures (in camera), has anyone tried this with photoshop? How would you do it?

The simplest way is to experiment. Take the 2 shots but have the camera in exactly the same position (i.e. don’t move it). In photoshop open one pic and then the other. Copy one across to the other to make two layers and then experiment from there on in with opacity etc.

It’s fascinating what you can do once you start trying different functions within photoshop

Here's a tip. Whenever you see a great sunset...shoot it and save it. Take any night shot....select the dark sky using any of the selection tools...and then copy your sunset and choose..PASTE INTO. Get yourself a collection of great cloud shots and use them the same way.

I used just one photo for it. I adjusted the exposure in NC for the buildings then cut the skyline out of the picture in PS7. Then i adjusted the exposure to highlight the clouds in the background and pasted the buildings into that image. Then cropped and tidied a couple of distractions and viola... the above image.

Great shot Killakoala - just proves yet again that it is not just the photo itself but the person skilled in post manipulation that makes for really great and memorable photos
