I've now spent some real time on the 3rd - i'm thinking this will print well - (one of the guys on the hike has a printing business - offered up a free canvas print.

I gotta say, I discovered control points in Capture NX tonight.... wow, they make messing with the photos fun! Little dots and sliders and gizmos, just awesome!

I like your twisted tree but it seems a little overexposed on my monitor.

The colour balance is actually a bit warm on the twisted tree - the sky is over-exposed. I'll play with it some more!

I think that the twisted tree could really be a winner. Fix the colour balance and try cloning a little bit off the tree were it goes out of the frame. Looks a bit like an amputee at the moment. Otherwise they are great.

Overland Track is on the shortlist for next summer

The twisted tree is good, but somehow not isolated enough for me. I took a bunch of photos around there too, and wasn't really happy with any of those either.

You were there late march? Was there much burning off going on? When we were there same time last year, a couple of days were really smoky and we saw mushroom clouds from the forest burns that were happening just outside the world heritage area. Apparently, it's a yearly event.

I'm planning to return, maybe November, to do the Walls of Jerusalem and the Tarkine. I could live over there, great place!

Yes we only got back to Sydney last Sunday. I saw one burn, not very large in the very far distance on one day. Perhaps I could try and isolate the tree more from the background - there is so much to look at.

As the walk I did was an extended boys weekend (a 40th objective for one of the gang), I have promised lizzie that I will take her back - we were thinking that Spring, when the flowers are out would be very nice, I think that is in November?

November is late spring, but spring has the reputation for a lot of windy wet weather over there, so I figure late spring will be better than early spring

Here's a shot of one of the mushroom clouds from the tent platforms at lake windermere. We saw 3 or 4 of them, by the end of the day there was smoke everywhere - it was hard to tell the difference between smoke and mist in some of the photos I took.

Thanks! Yes, I carried a tripod. The trick is to not get too tired (or lazy) to use it. Those rocks at Pelion were slippery, I nearly landed in the water myself!

Love the shots
Been a few years since I was there!
My fav is number 4, with the gnarled old bleached dead tree.
The adjustment I would make is to add more black to the shot (do not know what that is in NX) and see how that looks.
I know the canon plug in to photoshop has a "black" slider bar and tweaking that at the low end can make a big difference to how much the photo seems to "pop"

Last winter, I did the track, took 9 days. Fantastic walk. Another haunt of mine is http://www.bushwalk-tasmania.com and there has been quite a bit of discussion on the Overland Track there lately.

I forgot to add, for all the Overland Track devotees, there is a good reference page on the Overland Track Website specific for people who are using maps.

They even have a downloadable Google Earth .kml file of the track. Great for visualising the route before you get there.
