ScentWell I'm about to get my first SLR, so I guess I better get used to this whole critique thing.
Here's my first uploaded image - I managed to get my hands on a 400D (while I await my D70s in the post) in an attempt to get into the 'Scent' challenge - but alas I am still only a newbie with no access to the challenges. I see I had gone with a similar theme to some other entries. Please pick apart at your pleasure...but be nice to a newbie D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: ScentAndy,
This is a great image. You make the observation that there were other similar images in the recent challenge; just my opinion, but this one does a better job of addressing the challenge theme. g.

Re: ScentLucky for you its 'Be nice to newbies month'... no calories.. less snark... just good home grown goodness till April 30th... *nods*..
I know... its killing me too... Not a bad shot at all though Andy.. loads of detail and your composition is very good...brilliant warm lighting also... Looking forward to seeing your shots once you get your DSLR.. The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list...
Re: ScentYes I did wonder what the policy was regarding encouraging the newbies!
The lighting turned out better than I expected...good ol trusty mag light. Meanwhile my D70s showed up today (albeit without a battery cover ) but I'm still waiting on lenses. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Scent
The little plastic thingy that covers the battery's base and contacts? They lose themselves almost as quickly as the D200 pc socket covers and the D70 LCD covers. I would not be losing any sleep over that. To me they're reminiscent of the "ever-ready" cases that SLR bodies came with in the 70s and 80s. It was not without good reason that they used to be nicknamed "never-ready" cases, and I expect there's a whole raft of similar good reasons that we do not see them at all these days. g.

Re: ScentNo I think it's the plastic cover that holds the battery inside the camera that I'm missing.
You see it came with an optional battery grip - which I didn't plan on using. But it looks like I have no other choice for the time being. D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: Scent
Oh no... use the battery grip... once you get used to them you wonder how you ever did without one... I would be lost without mine! The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on the list...
Re: ScentWell semi functional grip. In that yes you can grip it, but the alternate shutter release apparently doesn't work.
Still I'll give it a go and see how it feels. Cheers! D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
Re: ScentIs the battery cover hiding inside the upright that goes into the battery compartment? There is a handy storage spot there for it...

Re: ScentThought you were onto something there Justin...but no go.
Cheers anyway. No dramas anyway - Nikon have quoted me $2.70 for replacement (plus $10 postage of course!) D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600
