d200 battery mixing

Postby wendellt on Tue Apr 15, 2008 6:20 pm

hi people

can you mix a 1600mah battery with a genuine nikon 1500mah battery in the mbd grip of a d200

i need to buy an extra d200 battery i already have 2 nikon ones and i just came across this other brand battery on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-Phottix-Batter ... dZViewItem
would like to determine if its safe to use this battery in conjunction with the nikon one

thanks in advance

hi mate, from my limited recollection of battery technology, the mAh is the batteries capacity, like the size of a petrol tank, and the voltage is like the type of petrol. so so long as the voltage is the same, the engine will run smoothly.

i think it would be similar to combining AA batteries in an SB800, that were 2700mAh and 1500mAh, think you will be fine.

You can, and I did on the weekend. The batteries are used separately, as in Left 100 -0 then Right 100 - 0, no issues with different combos of batteries.

Doing this would most definitely not be fine - risk is ruining the lower capacity cells by reverse charging them, or worse.

Luckily the grip uses the batteries seperately, as Alpha_7 points out, so no problems there.

Cheers

Oz, two different systems here but as a rule I wouldn't suggest combining vastly different batteries. In this case they are used separately so no concern. The D200 batteries are Li ion, the SB800 are Ni mh. The difference is minor in the 2 for the grip so it would be fine, but li ion technology can be highly dangerous and drops into thermal runaway if not used with care. Using Oz's analogy, if one tank was empty and the other 3/4 full, the 3/4 full one would immediately try to fill the empty one when turned on. As li ion has the capacity to discharge very quickly, overheating can occur, venting, etc and associated dangers.

I believe that is the same reason that your SB800 (again taking Oz's example) would perform like it was full of 1500mah batteries in your example. As an aside, I am testing right now a bunch of different brands of rechargeable AA batteries and 4 different chargers in an SB800, will let everyone know what works out to be the best. (If I don't go nuts first from my SB800 going off every 20 seconds in my family room and reflecting through the house!)

Wendell, as Gary said Jeff from Servaas will steer you in the right direction. If you can wait till later tonight, my SB800 is snapping away as we speak, as it did from 6pm till 12pm last night and from 8 am this morning, I will have a fairly comprehensive AA battery test which includes some of the well respected names. Will PM you when I post it, which should be later tonight.

Yes, but I found an alternative solution so didn't pursue it.
