to upgrade 400d to 40d?

Postby dervish on Mon Apr 28, 2008 4:52 pm

I was thinking about upgrading from a 400d to a 40d. my brother got a 40d from thailand for approx A$1000 and he is going back there again in approx 2 weeks. Ive had the 400d for about 1 and 1/2 years now and am thinking about upgrading. I've had a quick play with it and it feels good.

What impressed me was :

1. 3200 iso (tho i haven't had a chance to do a comparision interms of noise. My bro tells me its prob the same as the 800/1600iso in terms of noise) I do not like flash photography much (prob because i haven't really explored it and am a noob) and i have F4 lenses. I have shot indoors witht eh f4's with 1600 iso and am reasonably happy with them. I am hoping to get better quality out of the 40D and perhaps even utilise the 3200 iso to get faster shutter speed.

2. faster frame rate per sec. I have dabbled with HDR and have found that sometimes the 400d is slow and and i then get some ghosting when i merge the shots.

3. Better/faster AF?

4. better IQ overall?

I am hoping to sell my 400d twin lens kit for approx $750 and by adding $250-300 i can get the 40D (i don't use the kit lenses anymore) Does anyone think this is money well spent? Or should i just put the $250-300 towards another lens or maybe until 50D comes along.

Thanks

Hi,
I have gone 400D to 40D this month and am very happy with the result for the investment
- Love the 6.5 fps (I do lots of kids sport and outgrew the 400 3fps)
- Love the bigger screen , especially the live view and ability to show settings on the big screen - I wear reading glasses (but not when I take photos through the viewfinder) and the large view means I no longer need to put them on /off to see what I am doing
- Love the more robust body - had a fall on cement this week so this has paid off already
- love the adjustment dial and 'mini mouse' and the generally setout of buttons
I am still getting used to all the features but also found some good how to's for the 40D on Utube - so might be worth a look ...

I figure the 50D could be a year away and I could win the lottery and buy the Mark 111 ...but I had outgrown the 400d so time to move on (I am still keeping it for a second body so I can now dedicate it to my 100m macro lense )

Just entered the dslr scene after purchasing my first yesterday, A 40D. Am yet to put it down. Even as I type this reply its in my other hand. Put a lot a thought and research into my purchase and even after only 24 hours can highly recommend to get one. Primarly chose it for its body size and quality, 6 fps, menu setup and iso range. Looking forward to many years ahead of happy snapping.

thanks for the reply. I think thats what i am going to do. By the sounds of things its reasonable step up from 400d to 40 which will keep me happy until maybe one day i can afford 5d :D

I have had a 350d for about 2 years now.I mainly take sports shots and the 350d has been great for that purpose, but hearing that the 40d can shoot 6 frames per second,im going to upgrade to one of them. They are pretty reasonably priced now,you can get a 40d body on ebay for around $1200.

personally i would check out the 450d, after reading a number of reviews it seems to feature most of the 40d's features
Cheers,
Andrew

As much as I think the 450D is great on paper, I just can't stand using it, the 40D is much better in terms of build quality, AF, processing, ergonomics, noise and such, since they're very close in price, I'd take the 40D any day.

I was a 350D shooter for a long time, and I recently upgraded to a 40D. I love it.

The 450D may be a good camera, but it's still an entry level camera. The 40D is a much more serious contender.

Yeah definately go for it!

I remember a friend letting me play with his 400d and thought to myself "Ugh, the handling and balance is terrible" plus choosing options is just way too slow. I prefer the 40D handling (slightly better than the 30D.

Have fun with it, you won't be sorry.
