Meanwhile, back in the USSA

Postby gstark on Tue Apr 29, 2008 1:51 am

Here in the US, Fox News on TV is reporting a controversy over an Annie Leibovitz shoot of someone called Miley Cyrus, who turned 15 November last, and is a hot new Disney property.

She's the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus (who remembers "Achy Breaky Heart" ? Noone? Good!), and is said to be embarrassed by the shoot.

Here's some details of the service.

And while I've been here there have been shootings in Tijuana and apparently some shootings in Chicago.

Hey Gary,

Never heard of Hannah Montana? You need to get out from behind that camera once in a while :)

But I bet you won't find any footy scores on the telly over there in the good ol' US of Aiy - but enjoy the Jazz.....

Cheers
Gary

A spokesman for The Disney Channel, which airs the Hannah Montana TV show, said: "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

Which is just so different than "deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell" sponsors products on The Disney Channel.

Living with three girls 10-4yrs I am sick of Miley/Hannah or hope or whatever her name is...

MATT

edit:- after following the links i can see why a 15yr old ,shot like this in vanity fair has caused a stir. If it was kate Moss(who is about the same size) no problem. but lets not forget she's 15yrs old..

Vanity Fair have released some shots from the shoot, the have them on there website http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/06/miley_slideshow200806?slide=14#globalNav

Honestly I can't see anything wrong with the shots....Am I missing something??????

Edit: Yes I realise she is 15, but both her parents where at the shoot and her father even participated in the shoot.... It just seems that the Christian lobby/Disney/some stupid hicks are getting excited over a bare back of all things!!!!

Edit2: I guess she got off better than John Lennon did after his last shoot with Leibovitz

Just a media beat-up and some extra 'free' advertising for Vanity Fair.

He wasn't Austrian, was he?

But seriously, there is an age of consent for some good reasons. I wouldn't have done the shoot, even with the parents consent. Is she fully capable of realising the long term impacts of this?

I'm not her and couldn't state what they would be for her. That's her judgement call. But the point is at 15, it isn't even her call - and i'm surprised the parents gave permission (even if the shoot was pretty demure and I agree there is an amount of beatup). I guess it's a different world out there.

IMO what is the difference between a photo shoot of a nude new born and this photoshoot ? Nothing, only apart from age and the fact that she was 90% clothed
Cheers,
Andrew

I fail to even begin to comprehend your point.

i'm in two minds about this shoot. on one hand she is only 15, which seems wrong for a girl of this ages to be portrayed in such a manner, although this is done in a reasonably artful manner. i see no seductive or sexual connotations portrayed in this shoot. that being said i don't quite agree with it.

on the other hand this is a heck of a lot more tasteful than half of what that age group of girls is wearing out there in the streets on a day to day basis.

like i said. two minds.

EDIT: and let's just say...."don't tell my heart, my achey breaky heart, i just don't think she'd understand..." :D hopefully my memory serves me well and those are the correct lyrics.
