Leaving next week

I am going to France for one month and have been trying to keep my bag within the allowed 7kg. I am taking my smaller bag (Mini Trekker)), D2x, 17-35, 70-200, 10.5 and I just get to 7kg. Last time I took the 28-70 but missed the extra reach and I decided to take the 70-200 instead. The TC, 85 f1.4 and other accessories will travel in the suitcase... I take the 10.5 as I know I will have to use it in a spot I want to go to, the 17-35 for landscapes, the 70-200 for people outside and for a different perspective on landscapes. Just thought I would share as this type of question often comes up.

Hi Gerard. What airline are you traveling with? Some carriers have different luggage rules, but 7kg seems to be the norm. It's a real worry putting any valuable stuff in your checked bags. You could always carry your D2x, minus lens, in a suitable handbag, and say it's a "small camera". It all depends on how strict the rules are enforced. Have a wonderful time.

Thanks Bob, I am flying with Emirates. The 7kg rule is strict in Sydney and Paris but seems more relaxed in Bangcok (noticed that last year). I am flying straight to Dubai and then onto Paris. By moving the SB800 from the bag to the suitcase I can have the 85 in the bag... I was going to wear my "photographer's" jacket and put stuff in all pockets but it is not practical. I am flying alone, usually my wife takes some of the gear on board.
I am going to try a good portrait of my parents instead of the snapshots. I sure will enjoy their company.

Bon Voyage Gerard! I don't know why anyone would want to go to France....the women are cold and too skinny and the wine stinks. They make good bread though, which they learnt from the Vietnamese. Oh...and don't get me started on the 2CV!

On this trip - currently halfway through - I'm using a Compudaytrekker. Cost me about PP100 at Ted's.

Takes the MacBook, D300 + MB-D10 + 85 f/1.4, 24-120 VR, 70-210 f/4-5.6, Siggy 10-20, plus spare cards and batteries, plus a spare t-shirt, underwear and socks, meds, and a few other odds and ends - cellphone, music player, etc all with ease.

So far I've boarded at each of SYD, LAX, and IAH with no issues whatsoever.

Remember too that you're allowed a camera and a laptop in addition to your carry-on. just ensure that your camera consists of your heaviest body and lens combo.

Tomorrow I am off to Hawaii for 3 x weeks, I have similar issues and gear as you, except I am allowed 2 x 32Kg hold luggage (for USA).
My usual practice is to carry on the body and a few lenses etc, but this time checked my insurance is up to date and will put the lot in a suitcase contained inside my Tamrac b/pack and will also take tripod and slingshot AW200, would like to take the Pelcan case, but that is another 7Kg's.

I have been stopped by the "Luggage Police" before at Perth and Heathrow, and have decided that its not worth the hassle with the arguements and in particular with the inconsistant advice that seems to be given out by the various airlines etc.
BOAC in Europe allow only ONE piece of carry on.

Remember too that you're allowed a camera and a laptop in addition to your carry-on. just ensure that your camera consists of your heaviest body and lens combo.

Just to add what I said earlier, this is from the Continental website.

Each traveler is allowed to carry-on one bag and one personal item. Please note your bag must not exceed 51 in or 130 cm (L+W+H) or weigh more than 40 lbs or 18 kg.

Traveling through the US does have some advantages. I am already checked in, have my seat assignments, and have been waitlisted for upgrades on both of my flights tomorrow.

Continental seem to want my business. United need to take note.

Interesting to see that UAL have just reduce the free baggage allowance for domestic (US) travel to just one piece. US$25 for a second item.
