A puzzling nikon conundrum with photos

Now i understand that this is not a proper comparsion, as many of these factors are not systematically/scientifically controlled. Taking that into consideration, observe:

vs

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dtang/2339788903/in/set-72157604136169724/

The first shot was made on a D80 at 1/30 at ISO 640 and the second one was made on a D300 at 1/90 at ISO 800.
Both had their exposures corrected in CS3.

Would you say this is an indication of the advance in technology that powers the D300 from D80-era technology? I know that the 80 and 200 sensors are the same, so d200 users, do you have this sort of issue as well?

The photos are very different, but I think you are trying to say the D300 low light capabilty is better?

D300 I think has active d-lighting which brings up shadow highlights much, much better.

Was flash used? edit: yes it was at different levels.

Pre-correction would be better for comment

I turned d-lighting off in camera. High ISO and lowlight I think are what's being examined here.

I'm not sure what the conundrum is? Isn't it expected that the D300 is a cleaner picture at higher ISO. I can assure you it will go just as clean with more ISO thatn 800.

The images reflect that notion as well...

the conundrum is that i checked my ACR data and i'm shooting at much faster shutter speeds with the d300 and also turning up the exposure slider more on ACR...but the photos still look better.

I can't wait for my d300.

the D300 shot is also wider angle and lower aperture

Again, what conundrum? isn't that expected .. newer technology and twice the price :)

I was assuming u were displaying the fact you could shoot faster and higher iso with less noise which is expected.. which thinking again seems to be what you're trying to say.

Since both had their exposures "corrected" we cannot tell what the exposure was before and after on each photo so cannot comment.

If you're trying to say the D300 is better for noise and quality at higher ISO, I'm sure everyone would agree with you without the need for proof :)

based on those 2 exposures i would say that it clearly shows how good the d80 is at "higher iso". all darker clours, no window, alot of soft objects in the bacgkround sucking up any possibility of light reflection etc.

sorry no comparisons can be made from those 2 shots.
