Updated faster Sandisk Extreme III range?

Postby Vodka on Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:16 pm

Just ordered and received a Sandisk Extreme III 16Gb CF card for a pretty decent price (< AUD$200) recently. Packaging and card label weren't what I expected though - both more plain looking than the "old" range. Label on the box says it's a faster 30Mb/s 200x speed, compared to the 20Mb/s 133x of the "old" range. All the accessories are there though - file recovery software on a mini-CD, small case, doco.

Link below shows what it looks like.

Supposedly it's an updated faster version, but googling doesn't reveal much info. Anyone here have more info about these? Is it even genuine?

I heard/read somewhere about the rebranding of Sandisjk products.

Digital Camera Warehouse is a reliable store. 90% of my memory cards are purchased through them and I do a quick download/upload speed test on everyone. So far they have been pretty consistent with other cards I bought from other places like JB and DD photog.

Nothing to worry about IMO

I actually bought the card from a place called Don't Pay Retail (not the cheapest, but they offered free shipping). The link was the only image I could find of the new look Sandisk Extreme III's.

Rob Galbraith is the oracle for CF speeds isn't he?

On his testing with Extreme III and the D80, looks like Extreme III is the top of the pile

No mention of an 'updated' model on the sandisk site

Me thinks that times have changed somewhat since August 2006! RG’s info would be out of date by now :)

I have seen these cards start to appear in shops.

Just went to check the SanDisk website. Nothing about a new version, but the pictures for the 4/8/16Gb cards do show 30mb/s so I guess they do exist. Seems a little strange that there was nothing written about them though.

I got stung with a couple of fakes, but I got the money back.
Sandisks suport line is excellent and they will soon tell you if its fake.
You can also register the card on their website & they will soon tell from the serial number if there is a prob with non genuine.

I was lucky enough to get a SanDisk Extreme IV 8G for Mothers Day and seems to be working well with the 40d 6fps

Yes, they are 30mb/s instead of 20mb/s, but I still don't think they are UDMA enabled (I might be wrong) so it's hard for cameras to gain much from the theoretical stat increase.
