Postby Thommo on Sun Jun 01, 2008 11:01 pm

I have a mate who has been talking about photography agents, ie they find you work taliored to your skills/knowledge and they take a cut. I cant seem to find any information about this, and would really like some help, basicly as some of you may have gathered i shoot a shiteload of music, and dont mind traveling to do so, im just trying to see if i cant start to make some money.

cheers

Thommo, you need to find a place suited to your needs. An example would be The Kitchen who cater to photographers with an advertising bent: http://www.thekitchen.com.au/enter.php
You need to find a music equivalent. There is also a well known image library you may have heard of - Getty Images who have music and anything else you can imagine. I know they have technical requirements for submissions in terms of MP etc, that is on top of whether they like your work.

I have no clue where to find music photo agents, I would suggest you look through the large collection of mags you have in which you would like to be published and look at the bylines, they often list photographer and agent

yup pretty much

just remember before you can just ask them that you want to specialise in music only
you will have to work hard to get in with them and this means doing some jobs you dont want to do

i shot stupid social events for a solid 6 months before they would send me out to anything good
it's a ladder process

No worries, question is though, would any of them be interested in stuff in canberra, and whilst i dont mind traveling up to syd to shoot anything and do have a mates place i can crash at, would it be worth my wild to do so ie, would i loose much money from traveling up there.

basicly i am in a round about way asking how much i would get paid, if at all to start. Im not in it for the money as such, its just that i dont know if i currently wouldnt be able to afford regular trips up to syd.

and i dont care about socials, infact i need to get a bit better at them, and stop using my fisheye for all of them!

when you start out with agencies your always a contributor you get paid what you sell

if your lucky you can get on as staff and get paid a salary

not sure if theres work in canberra but when i worked for titomedia i knew they could handle interstate assignments

best talk to them first see what you can negotiate

Well, it'd depend on how firmly the money is attached.
