70-200VR

Postby chrisk on Thu May 22, 2008 9:36 am

just want to canvas some opinions here. i have no need for the 70-200. i prefer to use the 300/4 as a tele cos i dont shoot in low light and my primes are what i use for all portrait work. the 105VR is proving a godsend until i pick up the 85/1.4.

its absolutely mint condition. front element has never been exposed, always had a B+W UV filter mounted. rarely used outside, never used for sports only weddings and portraits. comes with original box, packaging etc etc.

so my question before i list it on ebay is what price should i let this go at do you think ? ie: whats fair or what would you guys pay for a near new 70-200 ? yes, i know poon has it listed here at $1950 or something but not everyone has access to these forums deals and poon hasnt had one for a long time anyway, i see they are in pretty short supply.

thanks for any help.

Not sure, start it at $0 and let the market decide I guess. I don't think setting reserve prices is a very effective ebay method. Look at completed items to make sure that you'd be happy with the average price being paid though

If they are in short supply (and I think they probably are 2nd hand) then youy ought to get a good result.

I'll offer you $1000 cash right now. :D

I think around the $1700 mark would be about right.

If I had the money on me atm ,then I would have no problems offering $1400 cash, but unfortunately, I have just paid off my 24-70mm f/2.8 am in a situation where I am severely low on funds.

I reckon you should not have too much trouble getting 1800 for yours if you are smart about the way you post it on ebay. It sounds in really good condition. Grey prices, non Poon, is about 2300 (d-d-photographics) so a barely used one for 500 less is very appealing.

Now if only I had the cash!!! Bloody B&H does not have stock, else I could get a new one (if money was available) for US$1699, which will still come in well under AU$2K including shipping.

Considering what the Bargin price is ( depending on availability), I think $1600 would be a fair offer.

ebay would be the best bet to get some better returns.

But think, if you sold would one day you feel you may need that lens??

ebay never fails to surprise me at the stupid prices people pay for second hand gear..........all to save a couple of hundred bucks.............I cant believe these are people who usually shop at high street camera stores and think they are getting a bargain?!

considering the retail price for it, ($2375 is the cheapest i've ever seen at D-D and $2600+ from your local camera store), and the huge shortage of this lens WW, its actually pretty good value considering it was in perfect shape.

Quick question, bit OT:

If the 70-200 isn't a DX lens, then why does it have probs on an FX cam?

What problems do you speak of?

I would assume that it may have a few problems with sharpness (and maybe vignetting) in the edges (DX edge is still FX centre) but I cant see any other major problems of this lens on FX.

Yeah just the vignetting is what I meant by 'problem'. Is it expected? How do other lenses perform?

Cheers.
