New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?I know that this has probably been discussed before, but with:
-Thom Hogan saying they should -B&H out of stock -Poon not having any (from what I have read) -difficulty getting stock in from Nikon Aust how likely is it that a replacement AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR will be announced before the years out? I have been drooling over this lens for the last 6 months, I am currently no where near having the money to buy one, but I am planning for this, or the 85mm f/1.4 to be my next lens purchase. I would like to see what people think of the possibility of a new version of this lens, possibley with VR II and the Crystal Nanocoat coatings, being released in the near future. Also, what are the chances of a new 85mm f/1.4, with AF-S, Crystal Nanocoat, and maybe (really would like it) VR II? Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?Your collection would certainly be complete with these two lenses
I'm drooling over a D300 and 24-70! (and will be for a while) Nikon D70

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?I suspect the 70-200 will be round a little while longer yet. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, so all in all unlikely I would think.
Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
Yep my collection would be almost complete, I would still want the Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 and maybe the Tamron SP 180mm Macro (maybe not).
You'll get one, you sound like you want one badly enough!! I knew i was going to get one when I played with one at the Nikon Aust Launch for the D300 and the D3, back at the end of August last year, less than a week after I bought my D40X!!! Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
Who cares? If you want to buy an unannounced lens, go for it. This lens has been in short supply for at least three years. Pardon me, my new Ferrari California awaits. g.

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?the 80-200 f2.8 has been around for almost 20yrs? although there is VRII coming out in some lenses i doubt they will redo their 70-200. i hope they will redo more of their primes, like the 28mm f1.4 etc

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?The best way to fuel speculation and rumour is to slow the supply of an item.
In todays world where everything is Ver.xx or made to be superceeded we can sometimes be left waiting and wanting. A wise friend once told me "If you wait and wait for what comes next you will never buy anything" D300, MBD10, 50mmf1.8, 70-200mm VRf2.8, 14-24mmf2.8, TC1.7
Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
Good point mate. I just dont have the money for the lens at the moment, and if the there is a new version around the corner, it will give me another reason to delay the purchase and not take out a loan for it. I'll get one as soon as I have the money, on the proviso that I can find stock. Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
Reworked primes should be on their list of things to do, esp with the D40/40x/60 that just wont AF the existing ones. I always thought the 80-200 f/2.8 was effectively replaced by the 70-200 f/2.8, which in terms of a lens does not seem old enough to justify a rework yet. But then again there has been a huge amount of speculation on this topic. Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
I doubt that's an issue. The market for those bodies is largely a PHD market, and as such, will have little interest in primes. g.

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?They can bring out a 70-200 VR IIII with flux-capacitor for all I care, my current one ain't goin' nowhere!

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
What about the Pro's that buy these bodies as light weight travel cameras, or for back country work? I know I would get a D60 if I had the cash, beats carrying around a point and shoot. Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?i think gary's probably right. most pros i know that want a lightweight go anywhere cam take a G9 or something similar.
i still think nikon will be reworking their primes though. they are a bit long in the tooth and at some point need to be reworked. now is the time, especially their bread and butter ones. i also think the d95, (the model after the d90), may lose its AF motor aswell and only nikon pro/ emi-pro cameras will have a built in AF motor. if you think about it, the massive success of the d40, zero backlash in sales about no AF motor and 3rd party companies jumping on the in-the-lens AF motor to be compatible with nikon d40/40x/60 bodies....why would nikon stop there ? why not remove the AF motor from their amateur bodies altogether ? all of that points to a medium term move by nikon in that direction so even more reason to start their af-s primes rollin out the door. Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
The G9, the Ricoh GX100 and the Nikon P5100 are aimed at that market, but they still have smaller sensors. I agree that a lot of pros who go lightweight are moving towards these cameras, but I would still go with the D40/40x/60, and I am sure others will as well.
Good point - totally agree
Something tells me that this is not untrue, maybe they are doing a slow phase out, much like the slow phase in of G series lenses. All the more reason to bring out the AF-S primes. Cameron

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?i second the thought of the possible update of the prime lenses - to refer back to the 80-200, nikon shortly re-worked this lens in an AF-S version before releasing the 70-200 vr (correct me if im wrong). from this trend nikon are releasing all new lenses as AF-S, with the new d40/60 suited lenses coming out (18-55vr etc). nikon also updated their serious telephoto range up to the 600mm as AF-S correct? to be honest the only group of lenses that are now left out from this update are the prime lenses. this should satisfy both the pro market for better glass (ED elements + faster focus benefits) and the consumer market for better lens universality (AF-S).
all these updates and im still lining up to buy a handful of AF-D glass ^_^ (dB) image gallery
Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?The same thought here, I am thinking maybe I should hold off the 85mm for a bit, see if there is an update for the shorter primes. With all the talk of the 70-200 VR being weak on FX, would it be something that triggers a rework of the lens?

Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?Who knows
Anyway - I just bought myself a cheap (and hopefully reasonable) 80-200 2.8 so maybe when I have mastered that I can consider upgrading (or just chase long primes) Old D200+extras
Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?
I'm sorry that just really amused me this morning If Who knows and you are Who, what do you know I don't care if they bring out a new 70-200, my 70-200 is perfect for what I want out of it, although I am tempted to replace it with the sigma 120-300 f2.8...
Re: New AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8?i have noticed the 70-200's issue that everyone is mentioning which is obvious here: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nik ... /page5.asp
as mentioned by others it does go away once the Fstop is closed up a bit still, in many aspects it blasts the canon version out of the water note: if anyone is offloading their 70-200 i might be swayed to look into one (dB) image gallery
