This list of students who can't have their pic taken shocks me too. I wonder how this was to be monitored when the little P&S cameras come out???

Do these parents realise the psycological harm they're doing to their children when a group photo is being taken and little Johnny is taken aside and told he can't be in the photo? That kid will never be in a soccer team or any other sport team for that matter.

Yes it is sad when this happens but i guess thats life some people are very strange and sensative to these issues, silly i think in my books as well but what can they do. I have friends that will not get on the internet in fear of getting a virus, bloody silly but thats that way a lot of people think.

Its like worrying about something that might not even happen and well my moto is if you do get a virus that bad maybe you have been somewhere you shouldn't have been other than emails from other infected people computers. Panic for no reason.
Wish i had a camera to take his pic when i told him about the incadent being in the local rag today,LOL.
Oh well it made a point, BigBadJohn stikes again.
Cheers

I salute you John and i don't just salute anyone, even though i'm in the navy ;) Well done for sticking to your guns.

Now if you had a mobile phone with a camera in it you could have sneaked a photo of his draw dropping. :)

John,

Still don't understand what the problem was... Why did he stop you taking photos, but not the other parents using P&S cameras? What was his argument for that??

Also, post a scan/photo of the newspaper letter if you can, I'd be interested to see what you said...
Cheers, John

OK - the other side of the coin...
The principal was probably just trying to cover his arse. You would be amazed at the stupid things that parents go off at teachers and principals about. Many, many things that you wouldn't give a 2nd thought to or that may be totally nothing but get blown out of proportion. I can GUARANTEE that if there was someone there who didn't want their child's photo taken they would go off their trolley if it was displayed somewhere, however appropriate. Most schools have lists of students who aren't allowed to have their photo taken, as well as not allowed to borrow from the library, etc, etc. There are many custody battles going on and so forth. Schools can't do too much nowadays and I know that teachers have to think about every little thing. If you are responsible for a student or group and one thing goes wrong, even through the stupidity of someone else, you are responsible and will get blamed come what may.
And that folks, is the end of my rant!

Thats the story so far anyhow.

Which I believe was your original intention anyways! WTF was all this fuss about?! I must admit, the principal handled the situation well after the incident, but the incident shouldn't have taken place in the first instance.

Marvin,
The principal was covering only a small part of his Arse, if he wanted to cover the whole lot he should have done the same with the other parents with cameras.

PS Had a bad day, can you tell?
Sorry!
Glen, hee hee. Looking at the makeup of our school staff it would more likely be playgirl! :D Many parents actually don't want the responsibility for the books.
Yes, philipb I agree actually and I think he should have spoken to John like he did at the meeting. It just always seems like teachers can't win! Did he give reasons for just wanting John to stop? Maybe it was just that he was freaked out by the lens, maybe he had had another experience.
Don't know but it could definitely have been handled better by the school and I think John did the right thing sticking up for himself.

It's not just happening here, it's in the UK as well. Think I was reading the UK photomags and they were saying similar things about not being able to take candids of kids in a park or at the beach. Funny thing was I was doing just that at a beach a few weeks before. Lucky nobody saw me otherwise they might of trashed my camera.

Yes Marvin, you are right parents do complain about a lot of things and as i was a buss driver for many years as well, knowing what the school system is like but my bitch was why did othyers have cameras. The principal said he didnt see any, well he didnt look to hard and i can understand his point, but still this should not have happened and he should have aproached the matter in a different way, like i siad i would have gladly handed camera over for his aproval of my pics, but thems the breaks.
What is done is done, i have let them know i will not lay down nor am afraid to take it further to make a point. He apologised and i didnt make his school look bad as no names was mentioned, but i bet he thinks twice next time....
Cheers

Well all I am able to say is to stick up for yourselves. If we are to let these little hittlers push us round and tell us where we are able to take cameras and photos we will only have ourselves to blame.

I cherrish the day one of these people try to tell me I am not allowed to take my camera somewhere, or I am not allowed to take pictures. One thing I guarantee is they had better have clear signs on display and a very good reason for asking me.

Do not let these people dictate to you where you are able to take your camera.

Ps: I am not silly, it would be asking for trouble to pull a camera out in customs or other places where there is a very good reason not to have them, but other places such as the beach and public places, I think not.

Cheers,

Darryl.

this is an interesting topic.... here's my view...

i don't allow any 'commercial' photographers to take shots of my kids... whether it be at the park, at school, or wandering around.

shots at school carnivals etc etc i don't worry about, as long as they are not for publication...

why you ask? some shots were taken of my boys that were used for purposes which i won't go into here... and since then, i have been very protective...

bbj... good on you for sticking up for yourself in this case... there is absolutely no way anyone could tell me that i cannot take shots of my kids at school, on the beach, or anywhere else... they would want to have a damn good reason... as for P&S shooters being okay... that's just plain ignorance from the school involved.

cheers

Another interesting point:

I go to my bank at least 3 times a week and each time I have the camera over my shoulder and not once have I been asked not to bring the camera into the bank! Obviously I am not taking pictures inside the bank, but by the same token I was not taking pictures inside a shopping mall but was asked to put my camera away. . .

I heard commercial photographers need to obtain model releases; were you approached with such a request? Or did they just take photos of your kids and use them?

Heard a story the other day of a professional model who stopped and looked at a coffee container in a supermarket (US, I believe) and noted that the model featured on the coffee's packaging looked a lot like .... him.

Some time later, this guy is several millon dollars better of, having discovered that an image of his was used in this manner without his knowledge or consent.

Interesting that he got millions for it. If he'd originally sold it to the company how much do you reckon he'd have gotten for it? Certainly wouldn't have been millions. :)

Un Bloody Real, Not just schools jumping on the band wagon the council wants there say as well.

Like other nite i seen a fellow who cuts his lawns got a $200 fine for putting grass clipping around the base of tree for mulch on his footpath and got fines for it, as well for us who mow our lawns and us home owners who pay our rates always have to cut the grass on the councils footpaths. Bullshit, if they tried a stunt like that to me i would not cut it, or maybe we just should send them a bill for upkeep of there footpaths, hell they charge us for catching rainwater on our own roofs with the water catchment levi.
they are a JOKE

Just don't do the footpath one.. and then complain to the council when it looks like hell.. :)

Seriously though.. This is really starting to piss me off.. The media isn't helping the situation either.

If we were to believe the media, 90% of the population are pedophiles cause they have a camera and use it to photograph people (shock horror).

We really need to come up with something to educate the general public otherwise the use of cameras outside of your own home will be classified as illegal.

I also read this over breakfast and couldn't believe it. Does this mean no one can answer a phone call at Maroubra pool? Maybe leave all mobiles at the front counter? I am really p......... off with people telling me what I can and can't photograph. No bridge, no great ocean road, no pools, no beach. Guys, get ready for a lot of posts of my backyard, only thing left. Maybe there will be as many shots of my backyard as Birddy's? Not sure how, but I think it is time for photographers to stand up and be counted. Digital has bought photography to the masses, now there is nowhere left to shoot. I don't want to be showing my grandkids shots of the bridge (or other kids) and saying "that was way back in 2005 when private individuals could take shots of the bridge, buildings, etc"

Personally, it feels like the terrorists have won. Everyone is now suspected of being a terrorist (if I wanted to be surreptitious, would I really carry a Lowepro pack, tripod and a camera with a 70-200 on the front?) or a pedophile. Maybe I should wear a green and gold shirt with a big Kangaroo on it to prove I am not a terrorist. Maybe I should get a good looking 20 yr old photographic assistant with large breasts and good legs to prove I am not a pedophile. Maybe I should just do that anyway.....

An interesting point is that a person who is intent on getting pictures of children for their own perverse nature would more than likely use a P&S or phone camera. I really can not see perversity in a D70 with a big lens. . .

What should we do with our camera and gears?
As said and mentioned earlier or on other threads perhaps a new licensing system will be applied! otherwise, you'll be accussed as: traitor, terrorist, pedophile, etc... you have to register your camera with local council or police station, all big B..S...!

I invested in my backyard, love my freedom, but once I'm outside, I can see no more democracy, no freedom and had no rights in this and that.

How can they stop the bad guys, of course not, only sufferring the real photogs with their genuine intention!

Lucky, I don't have any small kids, all my children are teenage, once they were young, I used to take photo of them nearly everyday and everywhere we went. I don't think people can do the same now as I did 17-18 years ago. Shame!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately for me, I live in one of the few areas of the country where people can do pretty much as they please within the bounds of reasoning for normal, sensible people. Council restrictions are almost non existent - if one happens to live within council boundaries...

One interesting point is that a council can't just say here is a new law. Laws have to be enacted and as far as I know there is no law to stop you taking photos in a public place. No one can manhandle you and take off your camera, so if it was me I would keep shooting and try them out in court.

Use virtual camera, they're coming soon near you  BTW, sending image to the wireless hdd drive is successful with WT-1 (b), I got a loan unit yesterday and play with my D2h, but it slow with 5-6mbps transfer rate in a distance of 100m eyesight, then I uploaded to my server thru the Internet connection. Like it but have to wait for the D2x.
Maxwell got 300 unit ordered, only got 50 from Nikon Japan.
Stay tuned, something will be happened in early or mid March 05, perhaps It's Nikon games, it seems to me they don't care about PMA, make people surprised, hope this info comes true, cos we got training scheduled of new Nikon Products with Maxwell on Monday, Wed and Friday. and it's not on the list which people have seen at PMA nor heard about it, surprised me alot this morning!
Yes, correct I saw by my eyes a wording of Dxx including in the product training. Time will tell!

Birddog,

So when are you going to be allowed to tell us all about all of the new goodies? The suspense is painful.

Cheers

Basically I think what he is saying is that he has a confidentiality agreement and can't tell us anything about the upcoming D90 :D

And more importantly do we have any Maxwell spies monitoring the forum who'll take birddog to task if anything slips out

ooooh - now you've got me guessing....
Shows like PMA always sort of mystify me in the way that people seek a result. Of the industries I've been involved in they're interesting, but most of the buying and selling gets done beforehand and anyone whose anyone sees the good product before the show anyway. It was always obvious to me from looking at the show layout plan that it was going to be a Canon event and that Nikon were going low key - Canon bought more than twice as much area. They take up an awful lot of resources in time and money and IMO, given the rate of change of technology, there are better ways to spend marketing dollars. In the past you used to need, and have to attract, the press contingent to any event. Now the press need the event more. I think we've all seen the effect of a couple of internet sites can have in the last week.
Anyhow, roll on thoughtful marketing and thoughtfull products!

You would imagine they want to make a big splash in their own backyard, so I think you have given us the cryptic clue to when our new round of body lust will start.
