Shoot a jpg (or convert NEF to jpg) and it's in the EXIF info, right down the bottom, in a field called "Total number of shutter releases for camera".

I know you cant check on a Canon, but my 400D has done 1279 in 12 months. I have never reset the file numbering. Not alot is it. When I go away for a weekend to take photos, if I take 50 shots thats alot- even on dedicated photography trips!

Quite right, I got mine in April 2004 so just over 4 years ago but at the rate I'm going it will still be below 5000 by the time it's 5 years old. I'm still waiting for the Blue screen of death to kick in to see if Nikon will repair it for free. :)

1,175 exposures over the last 3 months on a D3. (Couldn't find the count in the EXIF, though).

Prior to that, around 100 to 150 exposures over 3 years on a Gaoersi 6x17 (generally at the rate of 4 to a roll of film).

Clearly the most prolific user is ATL who has already taken nearly 3,300 exposures on a D300 bought December 2008.

I would say methd is the most prolific, the D3 came out at the same time as the D300. I cant see how 3300 exp since Dec 08 (I think you meant 07) even challenges 43000+28000 since the D3 launched (August 07)

No, I meant Dec 2008, why should we doubt what he says? Surely it's incredibly prolific to take over 3,000 exposures nearly six months before purchasing the camera. Just imagine how many he will take after he has had it for a while....

99,000 in three years, 33,000 per year, that's about 90 per day. 23,000 in six months, that's about 120 per day. How much post-processing time is involved there I wonder. Each individually processed in Capture NX perhaps?

Hmmm. Maybe if I wanted to compete I should buy a Gilde and shoot 6x17 with a motor drive.

Hey guys, I keep looking but I can't find this info. I've accessed exif data from Lightroom, PS CS3, Bridge CS3, Capture NX and ACDSee, but I just can't find a "Total number of shutter releases for camera" field anywhere. I've checked both Nef and Jpg files from D70S, D200 and 2 x D300's. Can anyone be any more specific? Does the filed need to be set up to extract it from the camera in some way? Please help?

There's probably a number of ways to do it.

Here's what I did:
Install 'Irfanview'.
Install Irfanview 'misc' plugin from their website - which includes an Exif viewer.
Open image in Irfanview
Press 'I' to view image information.
Click the 'Exif' button
Scroll down - and you should find the total count.
D90, 50 mm 1.8, 18-70 mm, Sigma 10-20 mm, SB600

Thanks again Andy, finally got there, but what a process?!?
"Total Pictures" is the name of the field.
I can only see this info in the IrfanView browser with Plugins loaded, no other exif view I have shows me this info.
My D200 did 8082 frames in bit less than a year that I had it.
My new D300's have 4157 frames and 3249 frames respectively since 22/05/08.

I'm feeling quite banal spending so much time and effort to gather such info!!!
